They can be destroyed by being led to the surface. After the player has used a [[Green Shell]] or a [[Red Shell]] to damage Kingfin, it will summon Bonefins to attack Mario. When the player has hit Kingfin two more times, he will summon more Bonefins, which will disappear after the battle has finished. In ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]'', a Bonefin makes a cameo in the [[Yoshi Star Galaxy]], though it only serves as a background element.

In ''[[New Super Mario Bros. Wii]]'' onwards, [[Fish Bone]] was reintroduced with basic homing abilities that may be based on this enemy.
