This variety of car drives only on the main streets, unlike the rest of the vehicles, which can drive on shortcuts. The Bob-omb Car bears a resemblance to the Mini Bomb Kart, which appears in Mario Kart 64.

In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Bomb-cars act as obstacles on Mushroom Bridge and Mushroom City. Bomb-cars detonate when they are hit with an item or when a driver rams into them. Hitting a Bomb-car has the same effect as getting blown up by either a Bob-omb or a Spiny Shell. After exploding, Bomb-cars respawn from certain hidden passages. On Mushroom Bridge, Bomb-cars appear from the pipe shortcut's entrance. In Mushroom City, the Bomb-car comes out of the alleyway on the left when players go down the hill and onto the left when someone hits one of the existing bombs on the lower level, and in the "Do Not Enter" alleyway on the upper level. If the player attempts to block the Bomb-car from coming out multiple times, it will reprogram itself to come out in an area that will evade the player, assuming they do not move their kart. The Bomb-car is also invincible from blowing up within the first three seconds of its respawn. Despite having a lit fuse, a Bomb-car never explodes on its own.

Bob-omb Cars | After being removed from GCN in Mario Kart DS, Bob-omb Cars return in Mario Kart Wii on Moonview Highway as obstacles. Their base has been simplified, and windup keys have been added on the backs of these cars to resemble actual Bob-ombs. Unlike in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, they respawn in the location where they blew up, and they can now blow up within the first three seconds of their respawn. Bob-omb Cars have also appeared in the Mario Kart Wii competitions. The competitions that they appeared in included September 2008 and May 2009's first competitions.

Prior to the Bob-omb Cars' inclusion in the Booster Course Pass, a model for the Bob-omb Car existed within the game files of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, though it was removed in the 2.0.0 update. Unlike the Bob-omb Cars in the DLC, this Bob-omb Car was based on the design from Mario Kart Wii.<ref> | Prior to the Bob-omb Cars' inclusion in the Booster Course Pass, a model for the Bob-omb Car existed within the game files of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, though it was removed in the 2.0.0 update.
