'''Bob-omb Battlefield''' is the first course in ''[[Super Mario 64]]'' and ''[[Super Mario 64 DS]]''. The painting through which [[Mario]] can enter Bob-omb Battlefield is located on the first floor of [[Princess Peach's Castle]], through the door on the far left. It is the only course which, without any glitches, does not require [[Power Star]]s to enter. Bob-omb Battlefield takes places in a grassland area with many trees. It contains several mountains and hills which can be climbed. Bob-omb Battlefield is always in constant war, the Black [[Bob-omb]]s vs. the [[Bob-omb Buddy|Bob-omb Buddies]]. Mario's enemies include Bob-ombs, [[Goomba]]s, a [[Koopa Troopa]] and a [[Chain Chomp]], the only one in ''Super Mario 64''. There are several [[Wing Cap]] [[! Block]]s and six [[cannon]]s in the level. There is also no way to fall off the course here.

The '''Bob-omb Battlefield''' is the first course in ''[[Super Mario 64]]'' and ''[[Super Mario 64 DS]]''. The player character can enter the course through the [[painting]] in the far left room on the first floor of the [[Peach's Castle|Mushroom Castle]], and the [[★ door|door]] into the room does not require any [[Power Star]]s to open. The Bob-omb Battlefield is the grassy battleground of a war being waged between the black-colored [[Bob-omb]]s, led by the [[King Bob-omb|Big Bob-omb]], and the pink-colored [[Bob-omb Buddy|Bob-omb Buddies]].

[[File:SM64DS Bob-omb Battlefield Map.png|frame|left|Map of the Bob-omb Battlefield in ''Super Mario 64 DS'']]
In the very first level of ''Super Mario 64'', Mario has to get to the summit of the big mountain of Bob-omb Battefield to fight the [[Big Bob-omb]], an enemy to the Bob-omb Buddies. All he has to do is straightly following the path with starts at the beginning of the level. There are several obstacles and enemies on his way, including Goombas, the Chain Chomp, water balloons and big metal cannonballs which roll down the path. When reaching the summit, Mario is confronted by the Big Bob-omb. Mario can defeat the giant Bob-omb by picking him up from behind and throwing him to the ground. When Mario misses and throws the Big Bob-omb from the summit plateau, he will come back and Mario will have to start over again. On defeat, the Big Bob-omb releases a Power Star.
The setting of the course takes place on and around a mountain, split between the territories of the two Bob-omb races. The player starts in the Bob-omb Buddies' territory, far off from the mountain in an area with two Bob-omb Buddies and a [[cannon]] that is available to use after the player has collected the first Power Star, along with a couple of [[crate]]s and [[Goomba]]s farther ahead. To the left of the starting area are a few Bob-ombs and a gate that has to be opened by pressing the [[! Switch#Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS|Purple Switch]] on the other side of it, providing a shortcut should it be opened. Additionally, several [[metal ball|iron ball]]s roll down the slope and collide around this area. Going up the bridge from the starting area leads the player into a field with several large rocks, Goombas, a [[Koopa Troopa]], and a [[Chain Chomp]]. Several [[Water bomb (object)|water bomb]]s fall into this area, damaging the player character if he comes into contact with them. Crossing the [[seesaw|teetering bridge]] ahead brings the player into the Big Bob-omb's territory.

In ''[[Super Mario 64 DS]]'', the battle is changed. [[Yoshi]] is the only character available at the beginning of the game, so the Big Bob-omb will throw Bob-ombs at Yoshi.  As such, Yoshi has to grab a Bob-omb with his mouth and throw it at throw it at Big Bob-omb, before the bomb explodes in Yoshi's mouth.

To the left of the bridge is an area with a couple of Goombas and several [[stump]]s, in the middle of which is the [[Star Marker]] for this course. Up the short set of stairs is a large field with many Bob-ombs and a cannon, along with water bombs falling from the sky to attack the player. At the end of the field is a path leading behind the gate from earlier. Going up the stone path leads into the base of the mountain, which has two iron balls (or three except for the first Star in the original version) rolling around in the crevice. The way up the mountain is a spiraling pathway with iron balls constantly rolling down it and gaps the player has to [[jump]] over. The player can also use a [[warp|Warp Point]], located in the small cave the iron balls roll out of, to instantly travel up to the top of the mountain. At the top of the mountain lies either the Big Bob-omb during the [[Big Bob-omb on the Summit|first mission]] (and also the [[Big Bob-omb's Revenge|fourth mission]] in the DS remake), the [[pole|flagpole]] during the race against [[Koopa the Quick]] during the [[Footrace with Koopa the Quick|second mission]], or nothing at all during any other mission.
===Star 2: Footrace with Koopa the Quick===
[[Image:KoopatheQuick.png|thumb|right|[[Koopa the Quick]] challenging Mario to a race.]]
For the second Power Star of the level, Mario has to race the Gargantua Koopa Troopa [[Koopa the Quick]]. Mario has to reach the flagpole at the summit of the mountain before Koopa the Quick does. This Star isn't too difficult since Koopa The Quick isn't especially fast and take a rather long path. However, just like when racing the Big Penguin in [[Cool, Cool, Mountain]], the player can't cheat. Using one of the [[Cannon]] scattered across Bob-omb Battlefield will make Koopa The Quick refuse to give away the star. However, in the DS version, players are allowed to use the warp on the side of the mountain.

Also on the course is a floating island that does not appear to be controlled by either territory. The island contains a [[Cap Block|red block]] containing a [[Wing Cap]]/the [[Wings (Super Mario 64 DS)|Wings]], a [[! Block|yellow block]] containing a Power Star, and a cannon that can be used to collect the rings of [[coin]]s floating in the air.
To get to the flagpole, the player must follow the dirt path to a wooden bridge, passing several [[Goomba]]s. After crossing the wooden bridge, the player must follow another dirt path, this time avoiding a [[Bob-Omb]] and a [[Chain Chomp]]. This path will lead to another wooden bridge that will tip if the player doesn't cross it fast enough. Meanwhile, [[Koopa the Quick]] will fail to cross this bridge, but then attempt to cheat by climbing the white rock that the player can't climb. There will be two spaces of land ahead of the player, but they should head to the right, in the direction towards the mountain. In this area, there will be several [[Bob-Omb]]s and falling water bombs. The player should try to dodge these enemies. If the player gets to the end of the field, they will find a gate, allowing access to the mountain. The rest of the course is simple, but easier said than done. The player must climb the path which rotates in a circular motion. Giant metal balls roll down the path, having the player to dodge or jump over them. Once the player gets to the top, they will see a flag with a [[Green Shell]] on it. If the player stands near it, they will beat [[Koopa the Quick]] and recieve a star. If they fail, they will have to try again.

==Missions==
This mission is pretty much the same in ''[[Super Mario 64 DS]]''. However, there is a slight change. Koopa The Quick will only want to want race against Mario himself. Since [[Yoshi]] is the only character avalaible at the time, Yoshi must take a Mario [[Cap]] and then race against Koopa The Quick. If Yoshi lose the cap during the race for various reasons, Koopa The Quick will wonder where Mario is and won't relinquish the Star.

In the original ''Super Mario 64'', the third Power Star of Bob-omb Battefield is found in an [[! Block]] on a floating platform/"island", which is floating near the big mountain. In order to get it, Mario first has to talk to the Bob-omb Buddies at the beginning of the level to open the cannons, then use a cannon to shoot himself to the island and get the star. The player should run to the cannon in the middle of the first field, look for the cloud shaped like a cat, and aim above its tail.

[[Image:Silverstar65.jpg|thumb|Yoshi getting one of the silver stars.]]
In the Super Mario Mash-up available on the [[Nintendo]] system versions of ''[[Minecraft]]'', one of the possible paintings that can be hung is the one for the Bob-omb Battlefield. In the premade world for the pack, there is a recreation of [[Peach's Castle]], including the room with the Bob-omb Battlefield's painting. Going through the painting leads to a pipe that takes the player to a beach near the world's recreation of [[Delfino Plaza]].
In ''Super Mario 64 DS'', the player, who can play this mission with any character, has to find the five [[Silver Star]]s which are scattered throughout the battlefield. This is the only mission that the [[Chain Chomp]] is running loose on the battlefield.

In ''[[Super Mario Odyssey]]'', the brochure held by [[Hint Toad]] and in the [[Odyssey]] depicts a bird's-eye view of the Bob-omb Battlefield.<ref>{{cite|author=@Frying_Pants|date=November 5, 2017|deadlink=y|archive=web.archive.org/web/20221225074155/https://twitter.com/Frying_Pants/status/926991088933629952|title=The map that Hint Toad consults in Odyssey is a map of Bob-Omb Battlefield from Mario 64|publisher=X|accessdate=October 9, 2021}}</ref>
===Star 4: Find the 8 Red Coins===
[[Image:Redcoinyoshi65.jpg|left|thumb|Yoshi getting a red coin.]]
For the fourth Power Star, Mario has to find the eight [[Red Coin]]s of the level. They are scattered throughout the battlefield. One is on moving platforms besides the main path, one on the pole of the Chain Chomp, one on a small hill near the Chain Chomp and the Koopa Troopa, two near the marker for the Power Star itself, one on a slide down the mountain, one on a tree on the floating island and one in a trench. When Mario has collected all Red Coins, the Power Star appears.

At the entrance to [[Super Nintendo World]], in the foyer of Peach's Castle, the painting for the Bob-omb Battlefield is hanging on the wall. However, the painting is a {{wp|lenticular printing|lenticular print}}; if looked at from a different angle, it instead displays [[Bowser Jr.]] holding his [[magic brush]] and a [[Golden Mushroom (crownless)|Golden Mushroom]].<ref name=Direct>{{cite|author=Nintendo of America|date=December 18, 2020|url=youtu.be/hQaRBOI-9kg|title=Super Nintendo World Direct 12.18.2020|language=en-us|publisher=YouTube|accessdate=December 18, 2020}}</ref>
In ''Super Mario 64 DS'', the star is basically the same as if it was done in the original version and as if the coins are in the same place, however instead of Star 4, it is moved to Star 6.

The Bob-omb Battlefield briefly appears in ''[[The Super Mario Bros. [[Image:Big_Bob-omb's_Revenge.PNG|thumb|]]
The player has to fight the Big Bob-omb, this time with a character other than Yoshi. To get the Power Star, Mario, Luigi or Wario has to pick the Big Bob-omb up and throw him, but not off the mountain. If the player throws the Big Bob-omb off the mountain, he'll jump back to the mountain and say, "You must fight with honor! It is against the rules to throw the king out of the ring." Once Big Bob-omb is thrown three times, the Power Star will appear.

This level was exactly the same in both ''Super mario 64'' and its remake. Mario has to fly through five rings of coins in the air using the [[Wing Cap]] (aquired after collecting ten Power Stars, going into the castle and looking up when there is sunshine beaming down on the rug) and collect all five middle coins of the rings to make the Power Star appear. Taking off from the Island in the Sky, he has to use the Wing Cap and shoot himself from a cannon to have enough speed to hit all the rings, as well as being able to fly upwards. The Power Star appears in the meadow near the Star Marker.

[[File:SM64 Bob-omb Battlefield Best Ever Sandbox-Style 3D Mario Stage.jpg|thumb|A graphic posted by Nintendo of Australia on Facebook that lists the Bob-omb Battlefield in first place for the "Best-Ever Sandbox-Style 3D Mario Stage" poll]]
*Bob-omb Battlefield is very similar to [[Wario's Battle Canyon]], as both feature a war between Bob-ombs.
*According to Giles Goddard, the programmer of [[Mario's face]], this was the first map to be completed in development.<ref>[https://pixelatron.com/blog/the-making-of-super-mario-64-full-giles-goddard-interview-ngc/ The Making Of Super Mario 64 – full Giles Goddard interview (NGC)]. *The painting of Bob-omb Battlefield reappears, like many others, on the second floor of Princess Peach's Castle, but Mario cannot enter it from there.
*In a poll created by [[Nintendo]] of Australia and New Zealand, the Bob-omb Battlefield was voted the "#1 Best-Ever Sandbox-Style 3D Mario Stage."<ref>{{cite|author=Nintendo of Australia|date=November 5, 2017|url=www.facebook.com/NintendoAUNZ/photos/a.292223797601427.1073741828.285708024919671/924284307728703/?type=3&theater|title=<nowiki>'[] Your #1 "Best-Ever Sandbox-Style 3D Mario Stage" is… Super Mario 64's BOB-OMB BATTLEFIELD! […].'</nowiki>|publisher=Facebook|accessdate=October 9, 2021}}</ref>
*In ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]'', if one plays at least 50 hours of brawling, then the level's theme song (simply known as Main Theme ''[[Super Mario 64]]'') wil be unlocked on the [[Delfino Plaza]] stage.
*At one point, the Bob-omb Battlefield was meant to have a river, but developers removed it due to the strong current.<ref>DidYouKnowGaming? (August 20, 2020). [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEg-EUhT9eA/ Super Mario 64 - Did You Know Gaming? Ft. Seth Everman]. ''YouTube''.</ref>
*In the DS version of Behind the Chain Chomp's Gate it is possible to use [[Luigi|Luigi's]] [[Power Flower]] ability to get the [[Star]] instead of Ground Pounding the Chain Chomp's stake.
*The name of the 100-Coin Star is '''Treasure in the Sky'''.<ref>{{cite|author=Pelland, Scott and Dan Owsen|title=''Super Mario 64'' Player's Guide|page=46|language=en-us|date=1996|publisher=Nintendo of America}}</ref>
