There are two types of Bob-omb in this game, ones with keys on their backs found throughout the game and ones without keys found exclusively in artillery stages in Dark Land. In the original version, both types of Bob-omb are black, but remakes make the keyed ones blue and the keyless ones purple.

However, it explodes after a few moments, even if Mario is carrying it. Also, they lack the arms they had in the previous game. Some are simply found walking and have rotating keys on their backs, while others are shot from mortars and lack keys. The keyless Bob-ombs will explode after a few seconds, even if they have not been stomped first. They also walk slightly faster and are slightly smaller. Originally, Bob-ombs were black in this game, but remakes changed the keyed ones to blue, and the keyless ones to purple. A tail hit from Raccoon Mario or Tanooki Mario defeats a Bob-omb immediately rather than making it stationary for a while, which is different in Super Mario World. Bob-ombs are completely immune to fire in this game, unlike later games, where fire typically lights their fuses.

Bob-ombs with keys are found walking forward, similar to Goombas. If jumped on, they lose their feet and become stunned for a little while, then explode. When stunned, they can be kicked, picked up, carried, and thrown similar to a Koopa Shell, and the explosion can hurt both the player character and enemies. However, it will not destroy Brick Blocks in this game. A tail hit from Raccoon Mario or Tanooki Mario defeats a Bob-omb immediately rather than stunning it, while they are completely immune to fire - both unlike later games where these attacks will stun or light them.

Keyless Bob-ombs have a behavior similar to the ones in Super Mario Bros. 2, walking briefly before stopping and lighting themselves. While they do not need to be stomped to cause them to explode, it can still be done. Compared to the keyed Bob-ombs, they are slightly smaller and faster, and they do not lose their feet when primed to explode. They are most often shot from cannons, though one at the end of 8 can be found walking independently of them. The cannons are often found in pairs pointing towards each other, so these Bob-ombs will often defeat each other with their explosions. They can be kicked and carried like the keyed ones when they have stopped, but since they explode quickly this can be risky to do.

Bob-ombs appear again in Super Mario World. In this game, Bob-ombs walk quickly back and forth before they flash and then explode. Like Goombas and green Koopa Troopas, they fall off edges instead of changing direction before they fall off, as red Koopa Troopas do. If Mario or Luigi jumps on the Bob-omb or hits it with a Cape before it explodes, it becomes stationary and can be picked up and carried until it explodes after a few seconds. However, if Mario and Luigi enter a Warp Pipe while carrying a Bob-omb, the Bob-omb does not detonate for the remainder of the level. Some Bob-ombs in Forest of Illusion 3 also appear floating in bubbles. These bombs resume their normal activities if the bubble is popped. Parachuting Bob-ombs, known as Para-bombs, also make their debut. The Bob-ombs of this game are similar to the sprites the ones shot from mortars use in Super Mario Bros. 3, though their behavior has elements of both types from the same game. The sprites are also not upgraded for the 16-bit system, similar to those of Ninjis. When Yoshi eats a Bob-omb in this game, he simply swallows it, like other enemies. If stomped on by Yoshi, it is instantly destroyed, and cannot be used as a weapon. Yoshi is also able to eat the bubble-covered Bob-ombs.
Bob-ombs can once again be seen working for Bowser in Super Mario World. In this game, Bob-ombs walk quickly back and forth before they flash pink and then explode. Like Goombas and green Koopa Troopas, they fall off edges instead of changing direction before they fall off, as red Koopa Troopas do. If Mario or Luigi jumps on the Bob-omb or hits it with a Cape before it explodes, it becomes stationary and lifeless and can be picked up and carried until it explodes after a few seconds. However, if Mario and Luigi enter a Warp Pipe while carrying a Bob-omb, the Bob-omb does not detonate for the remainder of the level. Some Bob-ombs also appear floating in bubbles. These bombs resume their normal activities if the bubble is popped. The bubble-encased Bob-ombs only appear in one level: Forest of Illusion 3. Parachuting Bob-ombs, known as Para-bombs, also make their debut. The Bob-ombs of this game are similar to the sprites the ones shot from mortars use in Super Mario Bros. 3, though their behavior has elements of both types from the same game. Bob-ombs reappear in Super Mario Party Jamboree as non-playable characters. They appear on the King Bowser's Keep board, with one located on the top of one of the four teeth of a gear on the left side of the Bowser Byway, with the other teeth containing a variable amount of coins. When a character passes this gear, it receives whatever is on the tooth of the gear adjacent to them before rotating clockwise. If a Bob-omb is on that tooth, it jumps on the character, explodes, and takes five coins away from them. Also, another Bob-omb is located on the north side of the board in front of an Event Space. If a character stops in this space, the Bob-omb ignites and start running to the character, who flees and is forced to jump into a red Warp Pipe which take them on the Bowser Byway right in front of Impostor Bowser.

They are also featured in the Paratroopa School Flight mode and appear in Koopa Paratroopa Taxi.

Bob-ombs appear as enemies in Mario & Luigi: Brothership, first encountered in Skorcheen Island. In battle, Bob-ombs count down every turn. Once their count reaches zero, they charge at a Bro. who must jump over it. The Bob-omb then chases the same Bro. around in a circle. Just as the Bob-omb is about to explode, the Bro. being chased must jump again, which causes the Bob-omb to explode near the other enemies in the battle, dealing damage to them. Failing to avoid the Bob-ombs' attacks damages both Bros.

Seven very strong Bob-ombs are fought in the side quest Monster Mania: Level 4, where they are level 100. As such the bros. are unlikely to defeat them before they attack, and their attacks can easily 1-hit KO. Additionally, Boo Biscuits cannot be used in this fight. Using the Protectus and Notdroppin Battle Plugs can be used to survive hits, while the Seedle-ize and Kaboom Attack Battle Plugs can convert them into weaker Seedles and Golden Seedles.
