The '''Big Mushroom''' is a power-up that appears in ''[[Super Mario Maker]]'', only usable in a stage by scanning one of the [[Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary|''Super Mario Bros.'' 30th Anniversary]] series [[amiibo]] on the [[Wii U#Wii U GamePad|Wii U GamePad]]. The item itself is a larger [[Super Mushroom]]. If [[Mario]] touches one, he will transform into [[Big Mario]], a larger version of Mario that functions like [[Super Mario (form)|Super Mario]] but can break through most blocks (with the exception of [[Note Block]]s) similar to [[Mega Mario]]. Depending on whichever Mario amiibo the player scanned to produce the Big Mushroom (classic or modern), Big Mario's clothes will maintain his original ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'' style, or change to resemble his modern appearance. Although the Big Mushroom can appear in all game styles, the power-up's effects can only be used in courses that are using the ''Super Mario Bros.'' game style. In all the other game styles, the Big Mushroom only gives the player 1000 points.

The Big Mushroom cannot be overridden by [[Super Mushroom]]s or [[Weird Mushroom]]s, but it can be overridden by the [[Fire Flower]] or [[Mystery Mushroom]].

Collecting a Big Mushroom also affects enemies and other elements; most enemies are given at least one of Mario's features, such as a hat, mustache, or nose, [[Lakitu]]s, [[Bullet Bill]]s, cannonballs shot from black cannons, and the [[Chain Chomp]]s' stakes are turned into [[Luigi]]s, Luigis can also be seen riding on both [[Dry Bones]] and [[Bowser Jr.]], cannonballs shot from red cannons turn into [[Toad (species)|Toad]]s, the [[Magikoopa]]'s robes turn green, [[Goomba's Shoe]]s are turned into [[Brick Block]]s and [[Goomba's Shoe|Stiletto]]s into [[Warp Pipe|Pipe]]s, [[Piranha Plant]]s turn red (as in [[World 4 (Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels)|World 4]] and onwards in ''[[Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels]]''), [[Bowser]] has a Magikoopa in a [[Princess Peach]] disguise riding on his back, the [[Koopa Clown Car#Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS|Fire Koopa Clown Car]] has a Princess Peach design on it, and the entire screen has been visually "downgraded" to resemble how the game would look on a [[wikipedia:Cathode ray tube|CRT]] television.

The item returns in ''[[Super Mario Maker 2]]'', although it no longer activates the CRT filter, nor does it affect enemies and objects. Due to the removal of the Mystery Mushroom, Big Mushrooms now replace their slot in the ''Super Mario Bros.'' game style from ''Super Mario Maker'', and as such, they are replaced by [[Super Leaf|Super Leaves]] in the ''[[Super Mario Bros. 3]]'' style, [[Cape Feather]]s in the ''[[Super Mario World]]'' style, and [[Propeller Mushroom]]s in the ''[[New Super Mario Bros. U]]'' style in the Course Maker menu. It now affects [[Luigi]], [[Toad]], and [[Toadette]], due to their additions as playable characters. It can also now be placed like any other item, rather than being amiibo-exclusive. In the nighttime ground theme, Big Mushrooms bounce away from the player. Only the modern colors return, with the classic-colored Big Mushroom being removed.
