{{quote|C-can't s-stand it! The hunger-the HUNGER!|Belome|Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars}}
'''Belome''' (pronounced "Bel-õm")<ref>{{cite|quote=We are not snacks, Belome!|author=[[Jordan]], [[Play Nintendo]] channel|date=November 11, 2024|url=youtu.be/tEkisXGY3nY?t=770|title=Let’s Play Super Mario RPG Part 2 😎 Gameplay for Kids <nowiki>|</nowiki> ‪@playnintendo‬|timestamp=12:50|publisher=YouTube|accessdate=November 17, 2024}}</ref> is a dog-like monster that is perpetually hungry and a minor boss featured in ''[[Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars]]'' and [[Super Mario RPG (Nintendo Switch)|its remake]]. He is encountered by [[Mario]] and [[Mallow]] in [[Kero Sewers]] and by the whole party in [[Land's End]]. During the first battle, the monster will eat Mallow after a few turns. Mario can rescue Mallow by attacking Belome continuously, although Belome may still eat him subsequent times. If Mario falls while Mallow is in Belome's stomach, the game will end. Besides eating Mallow, Belome can also attack by licking his opponents and casting [[Scarecrow Funk]].

In the rematch, Belome trades the Scarecrow Funk attack for more sleeping spells, including [[Light Bubble]] and [[Aurora Flash]]. He also not only eats party members, but also creates clones of them: [[Mario Clone]], [[Mallow Clone]], [[Geno Clone]], [[Bowser Clone]], and [[Peach Clone]] (called "Toadstool 2" clone in the original SNES game, to stay under the character limit). If Mallow uses [[Thought Peek]] on the clones, their thoughts reflect the actual characters' thoughts, with the exception of Mario, whose "....." is a reference to his role as a silent protagonist in the game. In the original game, any active clones must be defeated if Belome is defeated first, whereas in the remake once Belome is defeated, any active clones are instantly defeated.
'''Belome''' is a strange four-eyed beast and the guardian of [[Kero Sewers]]. He usually sleeps all day and night, until awakened by a traveler seeking passage through the sewers. Unfortunately, Belome's source of food are these very travelers. Since he lives in darkness, Belome has grown four eyes to help him see. Belome also controls the water level of Kero Sewers with a [[! Switch]] located in his chambers. When released, the ! switch activates a floodgate that allows water from [[Midas River]] to flow through the sewers.

Additionally, Belome also makes his home in a golden, underground shrine built in his honor, [[Belome Temple]], located at [[Land's End]]. Although he works independently, Belome may have control over the various monsters residing in Kero Sewers and Belome Temple.

==History==
==History==
Before entering [[Kero Sewers]], [[Mallow]] advises [[Mario]] that [[Frog Sage|his grandfather]] told him to "watch out for Belome", although Mallow does not appear to know what Belome is beyond his name.
===Kero Sewers===
During the events of ''[[Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars]]'', [[Mario]] and [[Mallow]] have to fight the dog-like Belome before the two heroes can head to [[Tadpole Pond]], Mallow's home. During the battle, the monster will actually eat Mallow whole, leaving Mario to fight all by himself. Thankfully, Mario can rescue Mallow by continuously attacking Belome. However, if Mario falls while Mallow is in Belome's stomach, the game will end. As such, Mario needs to keep his [[Heart Point|HP]] high when fighting Belome one-on-one. Additionally, even if Mario does save Mallow, Belome will find the cloud-puff so delicious, the four-eyed monster will continually come back for seconds.
[[Image: BelomeRPG.png|thumb|left|'''Belome''' battling Mario and Mallow in Kero Sewers.]]

Besides eating Mallow, Belome attacks by licking opponents with his massive red tongue (which Mallow confuses for a fire hose). The sewer beast also has some nasty magic attacks he can unleash on Mario's party. When Belome uses the [[S'crow Funk]] attack, he can change Mario or Mallow into a living [[Scarecrow]]. As a scarecrow, Mario or Mallow cannot use regular attacks or items (however, they can still use special attacks and defend). However, if Mario is equipped with the [[Accessories|Trueform Pin]] he received after beating [[Pandorite]] earlier in the level, the plumber will be able to resist Belome's scarecrow spell.

[[File:BelomeRPG.png|thumb|left|Belome battling Mario and Mallow in Kero Sewers]]
However, after being defeated, Belome does not perish. Instead, he tells the heroes the cryptic message: "If you defeat me, you still won't beat me. Beware the flood!" In this statement, Belome foreshadows his eventual return later in the game. He then warps away to his temple at Land's End. However, when he leaves, the [[! Switch]] he controls is released. As such, water comes gushing (as Belome predicted), sweeping Mario and Mallow into [[Midas River]]. Fortunately, the two heroes survive the rapids and continue their journey to Midas River.
After exploring the sewers, Mario and Mallow enter a large, mostly empty room with Belome standing in the center. Mallow panics upon realizing the monster before them is Belome, who then attacks them. After battling and defeating him, he tells the heroes the cryptic message: "If you defeat me, you still won't beat me. Beware the flood!" and warps away. When he leaves, the [[! Switch|switch]] he stands on is released, causing the floodgate to open, with the water sweeping Mario and Mallow into [[Midas River]].

Later in the game Mario and his allies travel to [[Land's End]], where they discover [[Belome Temple]] and find Belome in it. Mario's party again battles Belome and defeat him. After this battle, Belome declares he is starving and disappears for the rest of the game. However, if Mario and his party travel back to Belome Temple, they will discover a Belome in the form of a golden statue, guarding a room full of treasure. If Mario presents Belome the key from [[Monstro Town]], Belome will eat the key and disappear, allowing him to claim the treasure for himself.
===Belome Temple===
Eventually, [[Mario]] and his allies travel to [[Land's End]], the edge of the world. After traveling under a desert and battling enemies through an underground cavern, the heroes stumble upon [[Belome Temple]]. Once again, Mario's party must fight the four-eyed monster. However, in this battle, Belome not only eats party members, he also has the ability to create clones of Mario and his allies. Additionally, Belome can (like the previous battle) use his huge tongue as a bludgeoning weapon. However, Belome trades in his [[S'crow Funk]] attack for more sleeping spells (including the [[Light Beam]] and the [[Aurora Flash]]). These new sleep attacks can put the whole party to sleep, instead of just one party member.

In the Nintendo Switch remake, Belome makes a wish after [[Smithy]] is defeated. His wish is for his scratchy throat to go away. Mario and his allies can find Belome in his temple, in which they can battle him again to help remove his scratchy throat. In this fight, he creates stronger clones of the characters he eats, with each summoned clone providing a barrier to protect Belome. After the battle, Belome's throat is cured. Belome also appears in the ending photo. After [[Culex|Culex 3D]] is defeated, and before the credits start, Belome can be seen at Tadpole Pond with [[Toad (species)|Mushroom People]], [[Toadofsky]] and the Frog Sage.
After this battle, Belome gets incredibly hungry, and disappears for the rest of the game. However, if Mario and his party travel back to Belome Temple, they will discover a golden Belome statue guarding a room full of treasures. If Mario presents the statue the key from [[Monstro Town]], the golden effigy will eat the key and disappear, allowing Mario to claim the treasures for himself.
