Beehives technically first appear in ''[[Donkey Kong 3]]'', where the titular ape proceeds to knock on them to dispatch the bugs in greenhouses (either with his fists, as is the case in the [[Blue Greenhouse|Blue]] and [[Gray Greenhouse]]s, or via coconuts, in the case of the [[Yellow Greenhouse]]). In the Yellow Greenhouse, [[Stanley (Donkey Kong 3)|Stanley]] also forces Donkey Kong into a beehive at the top, which then falls onto his head. In the Arcade version, Donkey Kong, upon the beehive falling onto his head, then twitches and scrambles to get the beehive off, only to fall down to the ground, with the beehive then splitting open and revealing that Donkey Kong's face is partially swollen, with his right eye being puffy (heavily implying that Donkey Kong had been stung by the beehive's occupants).

Once all bees are eaten, the beehive will still reappear but with no bees to occupy it.
