|title=Ball and chain
Maces are large, spicky balls on chains that appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its sequel, Yoshi's Island DS. There are a few different types of Maces that appear in castles and forts in these games.

(HOOKBILL THE KOOPA’S CASTLE)}}</ref> are spiked balls on chains that appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (and its reissue) and Yoshi's New Island. They typically appear in castles and forts.

Each ball and chain is wound up by a Boo Guy that sits in the wall. Once a ball and chain is wound up as far as it goes, the Boo Guy lets go and the heavy ball drops. If the ball touches a Yoshi, Baby Mario will fall off the Yoshi's back. The Boo Guys take some time to wind up the maces, giving the Yoshi time to safely pass underneath. Ball and chains, as well as the Boo Guys that operate them, are invincible.
The first type is wound up by a Boo Guy who sits in the wall. Once it is wound up as far as it will go, the Boo Guy will let ot go andhe heavy ball will drop. If the ball touches Yoshi, Baby Mario will fall off Yoshi's back and the timer will begin. Luckily, the Boo Guys take a while to wind up these maces, giving Yoshi time to safely pass underneath.

In Yoshi's Story, similar objects appear alongside Ball 'N' Chains in The Tall Tower and Magma Castle. Unlike in the Yoshi's Island games, they are not operated by Boo Guys, they are black, and there is a pause before they drop down. They also have the same appearance as the game's Ball 'N' Chains.
Another type of mace, operated by more than one Boo Guy, is another spikey ball, but this time on a solid, spiney pole and is wound around in circles. Again, if Yoshi is hit, he will lose Baby Mario.

Similar ball and chains appear as anchors for Bowser's Castle in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
A sub-type of mace, also appearing in Yoshi's Island DS, is an "? mace". This type of mace has a wooden log on the end, which is covered in spines. To get past this obstacle, Yoshi must use his eggs to hit a question mark. This will then slowly life the spikey wooden log, making it safe to pass. In Super Mario World 2, the chain this object is hauled up by is spikey, and therfore, dangerous to touch, where as in Yoshi's Island DS, it wasn't, making it safe to touch, but still impossible to cross. Therefore, this obstacle can only be passed by when the question mark is hit by eggs.
