Coin, a [[Life Mushroom]], one or three [[1-Up Mushroom]]s, or a [[Rainbow Star]] to appear. In most cases, [[Mario]] or [[Luigi]] has limited time to collect the item(s) that spawned, and doing so successfully earns him a prize, most commonly a 1-Up Mushroom but also possibly three 1-Up Mushrooms, a power-up, more coins, or Star Bits. In the [[Gusty Garden Galaxy]], collecting every ? Coin grants a Rainbow Star, which is the only way to break open the [[Gold Chomp]] in order to get the secret [[Power Star]] in the mission [[The Golden Chomp]].
