Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels was a Mario game released in America. The game was first released in Japan under the name Super Mario Bros. 2, but was deemed too difficult to release in America. Nintendo then altered an unpopular game from Japan, Doki Doki Panic, to feature Mario characters. This game was also called Super Mario Bros. 2, causing much confusion. Eventually, the original SMB2 was renamed Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels in America and the American SMB2 was renamed Super Mario USA in Japan.
