Plenty of gears and spikes

The Mario Zone may be one of the wackiest Worlds in the Marioverse. It also shows Mario's sense of narcissism and is one of the areas in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. The Zone is very laid back in its set up, and consists of only 4 stages and no hidden or bonus stages.

The Mario Zone revolves around a giant clockwork tower-like statue of Mario. Every stage takes place in a different part of "Mario's" body. Stage 1 takes place in "Mario's Shoe," which resembles a gear- and blade-filled machine inside. Stage 2 takes place in "Mario's Stomach," an area full of "Stomach" bubbles (in fact, that's all it is; you must walk on these solid bubbles) stuffed with cannonball-shooting pigs and angry teddy bears. Stage 3 takes place on "Mario's Tongue." The "tongue" is a mass of chains and mines, and is one of the only levels with Bullet Bills (although the Torpedo Ted in the Turtle Zone are more like Bullet Bills). Stage 4 takes place in "Mario's Hat," and resembles a castle of Lego Blocks. Many enemies there are either pigs, toy soldiers, or block-impersonating jack-in-the-box. The boss(es) of Stage 4 are the Three (not very) Little Pigs "gone bad", known as the The Three Little Pigheads.

The Mario Zone is interesting because it has many references to European or American folklore or products. Such examples include the toy soldiers (the resemble British guards), the teddy bears, the Lego Blocks, and the Three Little Pigs.
