A Missile Bill in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Missile Bills first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3. They are red Bullet Bills that have heat-seeking visuals. A Missile Bill will turn around once if it misses its target, but continue their way if they miss twice.

They make a surprise appearance in Super Mario Sunshine at Pinna Park's beach. They are purple and shot from the Monty Mole's cannon. Spraying them with water will cause them to explode. They will always home-in, so there is no use in outrunning them. They can also be good for destroying the baskets which hold Blue Coins. This is also the only way to open them.

They also reappear after a long time in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Here, they act like they did in Super Mario Bros. 3, but now they flash red and are black in color, exactly like a normal Bullet Bill. They only appears at World 9-3, alongside a new sub-species, Missile Banzai Bills.

Trivia

  • Although Missile Bills do not appear in Super Mario Galaxy, Bullet Bills act in the same way by homing in on Mario. This is also true with the Bullet Bills fired in Super Mario 64.
