MarioWiki:Anniversary/2009

What? Why?The Super Mario Wiki was created on August 12th, 2005, 13:47 EDT. On August 12th, 2006, this wiki was off to a good start, but still there was only a small amount of active users. On Saturday August 11th, 2007 with a userbase finally forming, we celebrated our wiki's existence with an awards show on 30 of our favorite Mario topics, including favorite games, music, items, series, moments, enemies, and more. Last year, we expanded this magnificent event by including much of our userbase with Userpedia Awards I, and on August 8th, 2008, it turned out to be an even bigger success. And you've bet we've grown some more since then – we reached an astounding 9 digits in the page view count (100,000,000!) and increased that total number, accomplished in almost 3.5 years, by 10% in just two months (110,000,000 and rising!). As such, the time has come again to plan another big event to celebrate the wiki – and hopefully bigger! Sign-UpsAward PresentationsThe following is similar to the instructions given out last year, but veterans, please read the all-bold terms of agreement. During the Awards Show next month, the ceremony will reveal 50 award results based on the results of an average of 700-800 unique voters (Userpedia: a modest 100+). However, to spice up the show, instead of making it plain, you get to customize a couple of award results to your liking [you must be both a forum user (to actually do it in the ceremony thread) & a wiki user (to sign up here), sorry guests]. What can you do? Remember that the idea is to have an Oscar-like presentation with all the big stars (us!) who made this wiki what it is today coming. Suggestions:
You may do anything you want, not limited at all to the above, but please try to do something, and not be just plain. You should at least give out the nominees and have something like "The WINNER is..." and a few line breaks down for suspense (not too much). There will be short 3-5 minute breaks in-between each presentation. The idea is that users can comment on the previous presentation as well as continue script ideas spurred from past presentations or even have separate scripts off-stage, perhaps in chat as well. It's all supposed to be one big party AND show both in chat and on the forum. While we are lucky enough this year to have the automated poll system, I will need to manually delete some votes (yes, some people said all or none of them in the write-in textbox. I should be more specific next year :P). As soon as I can (before July 21st guaranteed), I will privately communicate the results of the awards to the signed-up presenters. The order of presentations will be Userpedia first, then Fail, then Mario, and will traditionally start with U/F/A1 and end with U/F10 and A30, but will be somewhat randomized (MKDD: All Cup), somewhat ordered so that more important awards come towards the end. Unlike last year (veterans: for real this year), I will post the order and exact timing of presentations (hopefully before the 21st). This way, multiple users can coordinate scripts for in-between presentations – such as a presenter being kidnapped and being missing until there is a delay, and then s/he is saved and finally presents. This also gives time to accomodate users who cannot stay the whole show (which is likely to last past 10p EDT) and make sure they present early on. Now, finally, the sign-up. Each award can only have one presenter. Please be 100% sure you will be here for the entirety of the event before signing up. Failing to tell me in advance that you will only be here part of the time may mean a loss of the presentation, including your script, as I will do all backups and simply use a default script to present the award. Try to limit the chances that something will come up unexpected; clear your schedule, etc. If a presenter realizes before results are given out that s/he cannot make it for any reason, the first on the "waiting list" (backups) will be substituted for the presenter. The backups thus have no choice in what awards they will get if they are called upon. You may sign up for up to 2 awards currently. I will announce a bit in advance if I will open up more to more people, but it shouldn't need to go beyond 4 per. This is first-come, first-serve. You may not sign anyone else up but yourself. A user cannot sign up to be a presenter and backup but the help would be appreciated in an emergency (i.e. nowhere-to-be-found-on-August-14th); we do hope that there is no emergency this here per below. THE FOLLOWING IS CRITICAL TO YOUR ROLE AS A PRESENTER THIS YEAR AND IS THUS IN ALL-CAPS. DUE TO COMPLICATIONS AND MAJOR HASSLE LAST YEAR, I AM TIGHTENING THE POLICIES. THIS IS A MUST READ. TERMS OF AGREEMENT: YOU ARE BY SIGNING UP FOR ANY AWARD OR BACKUP SLOT ABSOLUTELY AND COMPLETELY AGREE TO: 1. AWARD SLOT: PRIVATE MESSAGING ME YOUR PRESENTATION(S) BY TUESDAY, AUGUST 4TH, 2009, NOON EDT. IF YOU DO NOT, YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR AWARDS TO A BACKUP USER, NO EXCEPTIONS. EVEN IF YOU ARE 100.00% SURE YOU WILL BE HERE, WE HAVE SUFFERED UNFORTUNATE OCCURRENCES BEFORE, SO A BACK-UP OF EVERY PRESENTATION IS REQUIRED THIS YEAR. Sorry for the caps, but I must be dead-strict on this based on the past two years. You may use email or another means to send me the presentations, but since you should have a forum account to present, it would be best to send it there. I am simply "Wayoshi" on there, no weird characters. Therefore, I am also requesting you put your exact forum nickname – copy and paste the exact odd characters if you used them – next to your ~~~ so I don't get caught not knowing where to send your results. You may put in an email or AIM screenname as an alternative. Thanks for understanding, everyone. Awards Slots
I tried to make myself as clear as possible on my intentions for user scripts, but sometimes I don't make myself clear enough – if you feel any confusion, contact me via user talk, forum PM, or chat, and I'll try to make to explain it more to you. Thanks, and enjoy! Wa TC@Y SSBB & MKWii TourneysOnce again, we will try to organize some tourneys. The conductor of Brawl is Xpike; I will try to handle the MKWii one which is less likely. Please note that these are very tentative right now and need committed users to make it happen, so signing up shows a general interest. The tourneys will occur the day before or after August 14th but not on it. Similar alternate contact would be helpful. Tourney Slots
Voting! It's that time of year again – Mario Awards voting! As explained below, Userpedia Awards II will be conducted on their own site (link soon). But we still have 40 awards here – because we have a new subset of awards to introduce this year – the Fail Awards. Just 10 due to time constraints on Awards night, but there are still plenty of the worsts to go around, and you will find many nominees repeating in the best/worst versions of certain awards. We're also very happy to include embedded singular polls for each award – to skip, simply don't click the vote button! While the A#/N# system worked well, this should prove to be much more convenient. ^_^ Some notes:
Awards CommitteeAwards Committee work is over for this year, and helped greatly for the third year in constituting the awards. Major contributors: Stooben Rooben, RAP, Master Lucario, Neurario, Turboo, Ralphfan, Grapes, Plumber. Userpedia AwardsVery sadly, the wiki farm Scribblewiki did not back up their servers properly – a big no-no in online business. When the warehouse where their servers were caught fire, their backups did not function properly, and they were forced to completely shut down in shame. Nothing could be recovered, and it left everyone irate. Userpedia, thriving still at the time, went to nothing. Since, after several wiki farm experiments failed, Userpedia has found a new home, but many users have been lost in the hopping from sucky farm to suckier farm. It is currently here, and relatively active, but it is nowhere close to where it was a year ago. Userpedia users may now vote on the following:
