The Glossary is a list of terms and subjects from all topics covered by the Super Mario Wiki. This includes characters, items, locations, concepts, abbreviations, and Wiki terms. If an in-depth article exists for the topic, it will be linked. If something does not appear here, one should search for it and consider adding it to the glossary.

A wiki (Hawaiian for "fast") is software that allows users to create, edit, and link web pages easily. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. They are being installed by businesses to provide affordable and effective Intranets and for Knowledge Management.

! Barrel
The unoffical name for Invincibility Barrels, which are emblazoned with a "!" symbol.
! Block
Blocks that appear in place of Dotted Line Blocks of the same color after a ! Switch of the same color has been pressed. They usually contain an item or make up a new path for Mario to traverse.
! Switch
A switch that causes a change in the general vicinity. Traditionally, they change Dotted Line Blocks into ! Blocks, but can also cause other changes.
? Block
A block that contains an item that the player won't the contents of until they hit it.
? Panel
A panel that appears in Mario Hoops 3-on-3. Similar to a ? Block.
????
An enemy in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga that could be either a Blurp or Sharkbone.
1000 Needles
A move performed by Cactaur in Mario Hoops 3-on-3
100 Gold Coin
A coin that Wario collects to get 100 coins
10 Point Star
An item that gives Yoshi 10 Star Points

A single-player mini-game from Mario Party that has a prize of 10 coins. However, if the player loses the mini-game, he or she loses 5 coins.
1-Star Hex
A hex from Mario Party DS with the power to steal one star from an opponent.
1-Tower
The tower in the first world of New Super Mario Bros..
1-Up
An extra life gained by obtaining a 1-Up Mushroom or 1-Up Heart. 3-Up Moons grant three 1-Ups. When the player or character runs out of 1-Ups, he or she gets a Game Over.
1-Up Mushroom
A rare and expensive Mushroom that awards a 1-Up when consumed. It can be used to revive characters, recovering half of their HP.
1-Up Super
A rarer and more expensive 1-Up Mushroom. When used to revive an individual, he or she will recover all their HP, rather than half.
20 Point Star
An item that gives Yoshi 20 Star Points.
20-Coin Hex
A hex from Mario Party DS that can steal 20 coins from an opponent.
2004
A year where Nintendo released games such as, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, and WarioWare: Touched!.
3-Up Moon
An item in Super Mario World that gave the player 3 extra lives.
4.1 and 4.2
Mona's two wolf-like pets in WarioWare: Touched!.
4-Bros. Random Block
A special [[block in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.
4-P Pinball
A Gaddget in Mario Party Advance.
4-Wheel Cradle
Toad's cart in Mario Kart DS.
5-Volt
9-Volt's mother.
8 bits
Wart's army that he used to conquer Subcon.
9-Volt
A major human charater in the WarioWare series.
18-Volt
A major human charater in the WarioWare series.

A speedy character in the Game Boy Color version of Mario Tennis.
Able Juice
An item that cures any status ailment in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
Abominable Snowkoopa
A monstrous snowman, created by Big Mouth Koopa in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.
Absorbing Mushroom
A blue mushroom that steals an item from another player in Mario Kart Arcade GP.
Abyss
A bottomless pit where if a player falls down it, they lose a life.
Ace Coin
A special coin that appear exclusively in Super Mario Advance.
Accessories (SMRPG)
Items that can raise stats and prevent status ailments in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
Ackpow
Spinx hat-wearing servants to Mimi in Super Paper Mario.
Acrobatic Banana
An Offensive Power Shot used by Diddy Kong in Mario Power Tennis.
Admiral Bobbery
Mario's sixth party member in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Advance Coin
A special coin that makes it's appearace exclusivly in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 that are similar to Ace Coins.
Advanced Command
An upgraded Bros. Attack in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
Advisor
A Beanish species that reside in Beanbean Castle and serve Queen Bean in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
Aero
An enemy that looks like an arrow that appears in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
Aerodent
A rodent that guards the Topaz Passage in Wario Land 4.
Aerial Snifit
A type of Snifit with a propeller on it's head that appears in Yoshi Touch & Go.
Africa
The continent on Earth that was controled by Kooky von Koopa in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.
Air Bag
Giant, purple ballons that come out of Mystery Crates in Yoshi's Story.
Air Lift
A special move used by Parakarry in 'Paper Mario.
AirMeow
Cat-like robots that guard Fort Francis in Super Paper Mario.
Air Raid
A move used by Parakarry in 'Paper Mario.
Airship Fortress
The last course of the Star Cup in Mario Kart DS.
Akiki
A tomboyish Ukiki and mayor of Jungle Town.
Akuman
The first boss in Wario's Woods.
Albatoss
A red bird that drops Bob-ombs down on Mario and co. in Super Mario Bros. 2''.
Albatross
A term in the Mario Golf series obtainable by getting a Par 5 hole.
Alena
A playable character in Itadaki Street DS.
Alex
The Royal Tennis Academy's best tennis player and the only player who has ever challenged Mario to a match.
Alien
A species of green creatures that appear in the Mario Party series.
A Light in the Dark
A level in Yoshi's Island DS
Ali Mustafa
A tie salesman from Egypt appearing in a Club Nintendo magazine.

The PAL regions' name for Dr. Mario Express.
Alley Rat

An electrified metal ball that appears first in Super Mario 64.
Amulet
An Accessory from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars that increaces all stats by seven(except for speed, which goes down by five).
Amy Rose
A pink, female hedgehog that is playable in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.
Ana
A major human character in the WarioWare series.
Anchor
An item in Super Mario Bros. 3 that prevents an airship from moving if Mario fails to clear it.
Ancient Clue
A paper with clues about the Big Treasure of Space that appears in Super Paper Mario.
Ancient Minister
Commander of the Subspace Army, and leader of the R.O.B.s.
Anenome
A creature with large, stinging tentacles in Yoshi's Story.
Angelica

Water-dwelling Lakitus that appears in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

A kingdom in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! that is completely submerged underwater.

The bitter, vain, and overconfident mermaid and the eighth boss of Wario's Woods SNES version.
Arachne

Art Attack

An item that appears in Paper Mario that Mario gets in the Dry Dry Ruins.

A beta planet that was never used in the final version of Super Mario Galaxy.
Astral Hall
A room in the third area of Luigi's Mansion.
Astro Avenue
A board in Solo Mode of Mario Party 6 that takes place in outer space.
Astro Goomba
A helmet-wearing relative of the Goomba in Super Mario Galaxy.
Atomic Boo
A giant Boo made out of a bunch of other Boos that appears in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Attack Frog
A Gaddget found in Mario Party Advance.
ATTACK UP! Flower
A Bonus Flower in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars that raises attack power for the remainder of a battle.
Attacky Sack
A large, rubbery, Chomp-like enemy that appears in Yoshi's Story.
Audience
People who watch Mario and co. in varios Mario games.
Aunt Luigeena
The cruel and feared aunt of Mario and Luigi in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
Aunt Maria
Mario and Luigi's aunt that is briefly mentioned in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.
Aurora Flash

The final boss of Virtual Boy Wario Land.
Awazon River
The main location in Virtual Boy Wario Land.
Awesome
The forth level in the Special World of Super Mario World that takes place in an icy land.
Awesome Snack
An item in Super Paper Mario that recovers five HP and cures poisoning.
Ax
An item in Super Mario Bros. that sends [[Bowser plummeting into lava.
Ax Ghost
An enemy in the Sapphire Passage in Wario Land 4.
Ax Mummy
An enemy in the Sapphire Passage in Wario Land 4.
Axem Rangers
The five teenage members of the Smithy Gang, and prototypes for an army of mass-produced Axem Rangers that appeared in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
Axem Black
The coolest member of the Axem Rangers(indicated by his hip sunglasses).
Axem Green
The skinniest member of the Axem Rangers who likes to use magic.
Axem Pink
The only female member of the Axem Rangers who uses recovery magic.
Axem Red
The leader of the Axem Rangers and a balanced fighter with the ability to raise his attack and defense.
Axem Yellow
A member of the Axem Rangers with the highest physical attack and defense.
Azalea
A human female golfer in the Mario Golf series.

Badge
An item that can be equipped in most Mario RPGs that increase stats.
Badge Bandit
A species of Bandit that steals Mario's badges in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Bandy Andy
A fighter ranked 14th in the Glitz Pit in ]]Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door]].
Beldam
The leader of The Shadow Sirens in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Beta
A pre-release form of a video game. Beta versions of games are partially playable, but often do not utilize the final enemy placement, textures, or interface.
Beta Elements
Concepts that appeared in the beta version of a video game, but were cut for the final release.
Big Eight
A conjectural term that groups the major characters of the Mario universe: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Wario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Toad. The phrase was coined by the editors of this Wiki but is now considered obsolete.
Bowser
The usual main antagonist in the Mario series.
Brick Blocks
The most basic Block in Mario's, these can be shattered using Koopa Shells or Attacks. Certain Brick Blocks turn into solid metal when struck and release coins or items.
Bridge Work
A mini-game in Mario Party 7.
Bros. Points (BP)
Statistic from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga that allowed Mario and Luigi to perform Bros. Attacks. Comparable to Flower Points.

C

CERO
Short for Computer Entertainment Rating Organization, this company rates games in Japan.
Cheep-cheep
A common species of fish that appear in many Mario games.
Coin
The form of money in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Conjecture
An unofficial name for an article.
Count Down Timer
A feature used in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island DS.
CPU
Refers to a computerized player or opponent in a game.

D

Daisy
The princess of Sarasland and Peach's counterpart.
Destructors
A Glitz Pit replacement team for Bandy Andy in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

E

E. Gadd's Time Machine
A time machine that Professor E. Gadd had created in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time.
ESRB
Short for Entertainment Software Rating Board, this company rates all games in the USA.
Extended Marioverse
items that are one branch from the Marioverse. Includes series such as Donkey Kong and WarioWare.
Extra Life
Sometimes in the form of a green mushroom or other special object, Extra Lives add back one life to the user's total, negating the loss of a life.

Fish & Cheeps
A mini-game from Mario Party 7
Filler Character
a conjectural term used for characters that were created to fill a void. I.e. Waluigi is the opposite to Luigi as Mario is to Wario.
Flower
common plant seen in many Mario games, often as an item.
Flower Ball : Daisy's special pitch in Mario Superstar Baseball.
Flower Point
FP for short, Flower Points are used in the Paper Mario games to do other kinds of attacks.
Fire Flower
a somewhat rare item often used as an attack.
Fourth Wall
when a video game character happens to notice that he or she is in a video game.

Game Over
what happens when all lives are lost.
Glitz Pit
An arena in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

H

Heart Points (HP)
a unit of health that varies from game to game. When a character runs out of Heart Points, he or she will pass out. If the character is the last member of his or her battling party, a Game Over occurs. See also: Recovery.
Hexes
An item that is similar to an Orb that changes a space seen only in Mario Party DS.

Intelligent Systems
The company that produced the Paper Mario series and the latest WarioWare games.

Life
In platformer games, there are a certain amount of lives that the player has. He or she can lose them by being hit by enemies too much or even gain them by finding extra lives. If the player loses all of his or her lives, a Game Over ensues.
Luigi
Marios less impressive brother that usually appears as Player 2.

Mad Mecha-Spike Top
Enimies on Vibe Island in Super Princess Peach.
Mad Spike
An angry version of a Spike in Super Princess Peach.
Mario
The main character of the Mario series.
Mario Party 7
The seventh home console installment of the Mario Party series.
Mario Superstar Baseball
The first installment of the Mario Baseball series.
Mini-game
Short games that usually give out rewards.
Mushroom
Common food in the Mushroom Kingdom, often a basic item.
Mushroom Kingdom
The area where most Mario games take place.

N

Nintendo
The company that created the Mario series, as well as other spin-offs like Donkey Kong and Super Smash Bros..
Nintendo Gamecube
A cube-shaped system released in 2001 by Nintendo.
Nintendo Gamecube Controller
The primary controller for the Nintendo Gamecube, and can be used also for some games on the Wii.
NPC
Abbreviation for "non-playable character." Refers to any character in a video game that cannot be used by the player. Some examples are Bowser and Princess Toadstool in Super Mario Bros.

Paper Mario
The first installment of the 'Paper Mario series released in 2000.
Paper Mario (series)
A Mario RPG series with three installments: Paper Mario, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Super Paper Mario.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
The second installment of the Paper Mario series.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Tattle Log)
A log that Goombella makes of all enemies in Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door.
Partner
Characters that aid Mario in Mario RPGs.
PEGI
Short for Pan-European Game Information, this company rates games in Europe.
Player
The person who is playing a game and using the controller.
Pretty Flowers
Items in Mario Superstar Baseball that can only be found in Challenge Mode.
Princess Peach
The ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom who always gets kidnapped by Bowser.

R

"Rare" Collectable Figurine
A figurine of Count Cannoli. 65,535 of them exist.
Recovery
The act of restoring one's health, usually through restorative items, such as Coins Mushrooms. Alternate methods include visiting Toad Houses or Inns. In Super Smash Bros. games, the term refers either to reducing one's damage percentage or returning to the stage after being attacked or falling.
Red Paratroopa : A red-colored Paratroopa.
Rogueport
The main hub of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Rogueport Sewers
An area in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door that leads to many other locations.
RPG
Short for Role Playing Game. Some examples are Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Paper Mario.

Self-Destruct
The act of knocking oneself out in a Super Smash Bros. game. A common example is missing a jump from one platform to the next and falling into the bottomless pit.
Shroobify
In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, anything altered or changed by the Shroobs is Shroobified.
Shroom Kritter (Conjectural Term)
A name for a Kritter who has disguised itself as a Mushroom.
Spania
A Spinia with spikes om it's head in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Spinia
An enemy in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Spunia
A more powerful version of a Spania in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Star
A powerful object in the Mario series, often as an item used for invincibility. some Stars are even Artifacts.

T

"That's My Merlee!" Show
A quiz show hosted by The InterNed that tasks Mario with finding out who is the real Merlee and who is the imposter.
Thousand-Year Door
A huge Door with a legendary treasure behind it in Paper Mario:The Thousand-Year Door.
Toadsworth
Prncess Peach's faithful ward.
Topman
Enimies in Super Mario Galaxy.
Transformation
the assumption of another form by a character, usually through magical powers or the use of an item, such as a Super Mushroom. Transformations range from a change in size to the assumption of an entirely new identity (see Giga Bowser Transformation).

Unlockable
Is a character, gameplay mode, item, or other element that can only accessed after completeing a certain task in a video game.

V

Vaporware
A term for games that did start development but never were published.
Volcano Plant
A plant that shoots out fireballs in Super Mario World.

W

Warp Pipe
The form of transportation in the Mushroom Kingdom. Simply entering the pipe at one end takes the user to the other end.
World -1
A comical term for The Underwhere that is derived from the "World -1" label on the glitched Minus World from Super Mario Bros.

Y

You-Know-What
A CD containing unknown information. Mario delivered it from Piccolo to Bestovius.

Z
