Pauline was the damsel in distress kidnapped by Donkey Kong in the original Donkey Kong game. Mario (known as Jumpman at the time) had to rescue her, of course. He seems to have moved on and Pauline is out of his life.
In Mario and the Koopa Family, a TV movie about Princess Peach being kidnapped, Pauline is portrayed as Luigi's daughter.
