The Nintendo Comics System series, published by Valiant, made comic books of many Nintendo characters, including Mario! He usually turned up paired with other characters, like Captain N or Link. They were quite funny, and featured special little pages like "Ask Princess Toadstool" and fake advertisments, like one for "Koopa Cola" (the only soda made with real coal! Now availible in regular and extra-fat sizes!). Below is a comprehensive list of titles.
