Whale (character)
The Whale is a giant whale in Paper Mario. After Mario has heard about the fifth Star Spirit, Misstar, being on Lavalava Island, he decides to go to the docks of Toad Town to find a boat. When Mario arrives in the area, he sees a Whale in the docks. Mario also meets Kolorado, who is trying to go to Lavalava Island. When Mario curiously attempts to Ground Pound the Whale (or hit with the Hammer), it suddenly wakes up and starts complaining he has a bellyache. He opens his mouth that leads to his belly so Mario can check for any problems. The belly is filled with some water, some crates and bottles the Whale accidently ate. Mario finds Fuzzipede stuck on the stomach walls, when Mario sends out Watt; Watt's light brightens up the belly as Fuzzipede starts to jump around. After battling him, Mario forces Fuzzipede to get out of the Whale's stomach.
After Mario defeats Fuzzipede, the Whale finally feels better. He says sorry to Fuzzipede as he mentions that he was taking a nap while having his mouth wide open. Fuzzipede forgives and thanks Mario as he bounces away. The whale thanked Mario and remarks he should be a doctor. In return for the assistance, the Whale takes Mario to Lavalava Island. The Whale warns Mario that Lavalava Island has a volcano erupting as Mario still want to go. When Mario is prepared to go Lavalava Island, Kolorado sets off with him; this is the start of Chapter 5.
A Whale also appears in Mario Party 5 in the Undersea Dream gameboard. This Whale is also friendly and helpful. It is unknown if this is the same whale or another whale, though the possibility exists (several characters that previously only appeared in Paper Mario appeared in Mario Party 5, most notably the Star Spirits).
Trivia
- In Paper Mario he acts the same as Cortez's ship the Black Skull in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
- The Whale is constantly mistaken for a giant tuna by Kolorado.
- He makes a reference to Dr. Mario saying that Mario should be a doctor and even calls him "Dr. Mario".
- The Whale does not have a paper-like appearance, compared to most other characters and creatures in the game.
Area Tattle
- Some folk are calling it a tuna, but it's obviously a whale. Pretty huge isn't it? I wonder how many Goombas would fit inside one whale? He may look scary, being so big, but his eyes seem kind.
