Just curious, but when was this the official name? BLOC PARTIER.

As said in the article, Russ T. mentions about their "mysterious" origins of the species. If you played Paper Mario, and dug deep enough to read that line -- you'll know that's the real name. RAP.pngRAP... 14:33, 22 January 2010 (EST)

But in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Wonky says they're called "Candy Pops". Shouldn't it mention its PMTTYD name? A Strollin' Stu as it appears in Super Mario Sunshine. BoygeyPumpkineer A Smolderin' Stu in the game Super Mario Sunshine.

From what I can tell, these things being likened to candy was meant to be just that - referring to how they look rather than what they are. These seem to be intended to be the generic dome/capsule shaped hills that appear in the background of several games, which we don't have an article on. While they usually aren't interactive, they're a notable unrealistic Mushroom Kingdom feature that has been around since SMB3... or earlier, if you want to count the similarly abstracted triangle hills from the first game. Super Mario World had some small amount of interaction, as some grow or shrink on the map as the path grows, and one gets "injured" from Ludwig's castle crashing into it, while the cartoon turned them into houses. Here are some examples:

Given all their appearances (and sizes), that the subject of this article seems to be an example of them, and the fact that these are an iconic scenery piece that doesn't quite exist in real life, I think we can retool this article to be about these hills. They certainly look the part, but these Candy Pops seem significantly smaller than these domed hills tend to be, and serve a very different role. I wouldn't be comfortable unilaterally calling these all "Candy Pops".--PopitTart (talk) 13:33, March 7, 2025 (EST)
Besides, Russ T. describes them as "growing", which seems to indicate that they're some sort of living being, not something like a hill. Blinker (talk) 13:39, March 7, 2025 (EST)
The ones in stages in SMB3 are pretty short as well. A composite of hills on the tile layer in Super Mario Bros. 3, as seen in a hill stage Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:28, March 7, 2025 (EST)

i'm not down for considering all pill hills Candy Pops, but i'd be interested in an article about the hills themselves. and then maybe we can consider Candy Pops a variant of them? — Super Leaf stamp from Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury.eviemaybe (talk / contributions) 15:36, March 7, 2025 (EST)
I'd be fine with that. I was moreso having "hill" be the article and saying "In the Paper Mario series, they are referred to as Candy Canes and Candy Pops due to their striped appearance. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 16:23, March 7, 2025 (EST)
How are these hills??? Would you really point at one of these things and go, "yep, that's a hill"? They're even named after their stripes, which the recurring background element doesn't even have. I'm sorry, but how. Blinker (talk) 16:27, March 7, 2025 (EST)
They have patterns of various sorts in different games. And again, I don't think that's intended as a "name" so much as a "this thing kind of looks like these." Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 17:10, March 7, 2025 (EST)
That doesn't make sense. If you look at Russ T.'s explanation, it's clearly being used as a name. Blinker (talk) 12:48, March 8, 2025 (EST)
I am curious how that one's worded in the original JP script. And granted, it's not really clear what the recurring environmental object is, they're just usually close-ish to hills. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 12:58, March 8, 2025 (EST)
Well, it's clear that they're hills by virtue of...them literally being called that. For example. As for the original JP script, it's pretty much the same:「キャンディバーって しってるかい? ポカポカロードの わきに はえている シマシマの物体なんだけどね」, or "You know what Candy Bars are? They're striped objects growing beside Pleasant Path." Blinker (talk) 13:12, March 8, 2025 (EST)
I see, that is helpful, thank you. I do still think these are aesthetically inspired by the hills, at least, and there's still some ambiguity for the ones that are too small to be "true" hills yet still seem to be the same object as them (like those aforementioned SMB3 ones.... which include some of the scenery that can be gone behind via a white block, so they're not super-far-into-the-background or anything). Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:25, March 8, 2025 (EST)
I feel like the white block mechanic is moreso playing into the whole stage play thing. It's a bit like you're going behind the cardboard props that make up the background. Blinker (talk) 08:50, March 12, 2025 (EDT)
I think it'd be better for the Candy Pop article stating "These objects resemble the dome-shaped hills that are seen in backgrounds through the Super Mario series", rather than stating these are hills outright. Not even the Japanese version calls these things hills (calling them "Candy Bars" instead, which are moreso chocolate bars than hills).
