I was watching a video on this game, when right at the start, I noticed something in the intro cutscene (timestamped): The rival drivers' current names seem to be romanized from the Japanese text in the manual (which gives the drivers full names), while the game itself gives them Latin alphabet first names and surname initials. What's more, half of them have different names in the game and in the manual! George Turbo, Bronco Maccini and Panther Pedalf are predictably listed as George.T, Bronco.M, and Panther.P, but...
- Michel Rumble has his name spelled Michele.R (perhaps influenced by F1 driver Michele Alboreto?)
- Antonio Zico is listed as Antonio.G. Antonio Gico, perhaps?
- Howard Axel has the completely different name of Arnold.S. A Schwarzenegger reference, perhaps?
While Rumble and Antonio are in the same boat and should be a pretty simple, uncontroversial move, our pal Howard/Arnold seems to have a bit of an identity crisis. Should we move the page to Arnold.S (or Arnold S., going by this ol' proposal), or should we keep him as Howard Axel?
I would guess his name change might've been motivated by trying to avoid a lawsuit (a la James Bomb), since it'd be pretty strange if they changed a character's name FROM something unrelated TO the name of a famous person. The question is, does a manual supercede the game?

Move all three (Michele Rumble, Antonio Gico, and Arnold S.)[edit]
Move only the first two (Michele Rumble, Antonio Gico, and Howard Axel)[edit]
#Arend (talk) It seems to me that Michele and Gico were the intended names and were misinterpreted on the wiki as "Michel" and "Zico" through the katakana in the manual; not sure about the "Arnold S." name, since it's completely different from "Howard Axel", but at the very least we can mention their in-game name in his article.
Move only the last (Michel Rumble, Antonio Zico, and Arnold S.)[edit]
Do not move any (Michel Rumble, Antonio Zico, and Howard Axel)[edit]
Commentonio Zico[edit]
I've been wondering if there were other version of the game or manual that have different names for Howard/Arnold, and I found this video with Japanese in-game text where everyone had their manual name (which means Howard/Arnold is referred to as ハワード・アクセル) rend (talk) (edits) 12:45, January 15, 2025 (EST)
- Actually, it might be possible that the video you have got might be a fan translation, given that apparently, that exists. rend (talk) (edits) 12:50, January 15, 2025 (EST)
- I'm pretty sure that is this fan translation, especially since the screen that follows the title screen has text that appears to be a version number, "English v1.0", while the Japanese version just says "…And start" in that place. If that is the case, this proposal should probably be canceled since they aren’t official names. 1468z (talk) 13:20, January 15, 2025 (EST)
- Having double-checked, the base version does indeed say "...And Start" in the corner, not "English v1.0"; in addition, the text scroll is one of the things that was changed by the English translation. We think it's safe to stop this early. ~Camwoodstock (talk) 13:55, January 15, 2025 (EST)

- Should have asked me, I've played through the entire game when I was ripping graphics, and there's very little English text in it. If they'd been named in-game with it, I'd have noticed. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:23, January 15, 2025 (EST)
