Connie, Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Connie is a major supporting character from Mario & Luigi: Brothership. She is a Wattanist in Concordia who is Snoutlet’s good friend and helps out Mario and Luigi on their adventure. Before the events of the game, Cozette served as Connie's mentor and taught her about a Wattanist's duties before she was brainwashed into becoming Zokket; despite this, Connie is certain of Cozette's return. Connie is shown to be the Uni-Tree’s caretaker for the main purpose of growing and producing Connectar, a key element needed for accomplishing the big reunion of Concordia’s islands, all from her Bonding Can. She wears a sleeveless blue dress shirt with an orange circle on it and dark blue trousers that seem to go all the way to her ankles, and her hat resembles a Type A plug.[1] While her name is a real name, it is also a reference to the word "connector".[2]

History

Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Connie is first seen when the Mario Bros., after their arrival in Concordia, reach Shipshape Island. After an introduction, she explains that she is regrowing the Uni-Tree after the original's destruction. Connie's friend Snoutlet reveals himself and becomes the duo's guide. Throughout the game, Connie can be spoken to for more hints. She also accompanies them to every Great Lighthouse so she can use her Bonding Can to restore light to it. Before the first three Great Lighthouse trips, Connie travels to one of the islands connected to Shipshape to reminisce about her mentor Cozette, who seemingly disappeared following the destruction of the original Uni-Tree. On Allsand Island, Cozette had once saved Connie from sinking in quicksand. Following the incident, Cozette remarked that Connie may end up having to rescue her someday.

During Zokket's first visit to Shipshape Island, Connie demands that he stay away from the Uni-Tree. Zokket obliges, but only to advance his plans, while Connie starts to worry. She also gets an unusual feeling from Zokket that she does not fully understand, foreshadowing that he is actually her possessed mentor.

Before the Mario Bros. fight Pipegunk, where she asks Shun what Zokket plans to do with Glohm, a toxic substance used as a weapon by his forces, after which Shun reveals Zokket's plan to not just keep Concordia's lands scattered, but also to destroy everything, much to the heroes' horror. Later, when the group reaches the Gulchrock Sea, it is revealed that Zokket has been watching nearby. Connie and Snoutlet catch his eye, prompting him to change his plans to destroying everything in his path. Meanwhile, on Shipshape Island's deck, Connie displays curiosity for the Gulchrock Sea. However, she and the Bros. are shocked to see Zokket's forces at war with Bowser's Minions. She is not seen after the Bros. enter Bowser's fortress to get help from him against Zokket's army (unless the player heads back to Shipshape Island before storming Zokket's fortress), but appears in a cutscene after their failed invasion, where Zokket taunts her about their demise during their escape from his fortress in an attempt to break her, but she resists his attempts to do so, proclaiming that she knows that her mentor Cozette will return.

Mario and Luigi turn out to have gotten away from the Glohm wave that Zokket unleashed, despite his claim that they died. When they return to Shipshape Island, Connie is ecstatic that they survived, but is shocked when she hears that they washed up on Conductor Island and met the Great Conductor, a being who is worshipped by Wattanists as a god. However, Arc detects activity at Zokket's fortress, whereupon the group witnesses a barrier being placed around the fortress. Connie suggests that Technikki might have some ideas. Technikki proposes that there must be some way to enhance Shipshape Island to bypass the barrier when she is spoken to, after which Dr. Vulko suggests that Adaphne might have ideas and is somewhere luxurious. Arc identifies the place to be the Jellyfish Dance Hall.[3]

After Zokket is defeated, Reclusa reawakens from his egg and creates the Soli-Tree, which he uses as a fortress and base. Cozette is rescued and brought back to Shipshape Island, where she reunites with Connie. Cozette apologizes for destroying Concordia (despite being under Reclusa's control), after which Arc reveals that something is wrong. Before Mario, Luigi, Connie, and Snoutlet can investigate, Arc is captured by a flower-like monster, his mind being trapped in a dream as a result. Reclusa returns and reveals that he trapped the Concordians' minds in dreams, and that in this state, the Concordians will eventually rot away. Connie asks her mentor what to do since Reclusa has a barrier around his fortress, and Cozette reveals that Bonds can break the base with their energy. Mario and Luigi collects the Bonds from various characters they have met throughout their adventure, filling Connie's Bonding Can with their energy, which she uses to give them the power to break past the Soli-Tree's barrier. Connie follows them inside, but stays behind when she finds Cozette lying injured on the tree's middle level to tend to her mentor's wounds. Later, after Reclusa merges with the Soli-Tree and knocks the brothers and Snoutlet out with an intense Glohm fog, Cozette urges Connie to go help them. She rushes up to the Soli-Tree's upper level and revives them with her Bonding Can, giving them to power to fight Reclusa.

Connie confronts Reclusa after his defeat, explaining to him that while one can do certain things alone, there are some things that require teamwork, and connecting with others can help out. Her words only enrage Reclusa, who continues to rant about his failure, to which she responds by telling him a being like him has no place in Concordia and that it is time for him to disappear for good. Reclusa and the Soli-Tree disintegrate, and Mario, Luigi, Cozette, and Connie escape from the collapsing fortress, their Bonds allowing them to head back safely. After the heroes reach Shipshape Island, Connie, Snoutlet, and their people bid Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Starlow goodbye as the latter four head back to the Mushroom Kingdom.[4]

Connie can be seen as the staff roll draws to a close, where she can be seen taking care of the Uni-Tree.[5]

Super Mario Run

Connie makes a cameo appearance as a statue alongside Mario that can be placed in Kingdom Builder in Super Mario Run, added in a Mario & Luigi: Brothership-themed event. Her statue is unlocked upon completing three missions during said event.

Trivia

  • According to one of the Grampy Turnips in the Soli-Tree, the reason Connie wanders around Shipshape Island is because she waters all the plants growing there, not just the Uni-Tree.
  • Connie originally had a more human-like design during development.[22]
