Huh??[edit]

Mario, Luigi, Peach and Yoshi are in this category?? Blinker (talk) 16:53, January 11, 2024 (EST)

Pirate Land, probably? DK and Wario are here too. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 11:43, January 12, 2024 (EST)
I think we need to remove them from the category because it's not a recurring role of theirs. Super Mario RPG (talk) 11:49, January 12, 2024 (EST)
This is a problem I have with these career- and role-based categories. They're perfectly useful for characters whose role or career is a defining part of their characterization (e.g. Mario in Category:Plumbers), but come across as out of place when used for characters who only serve such a role in a few select appearances. Swallow had a proposal on the elemental creature categories to tighten their definition to subjects strongly associated with the element in question, so perhaps one of us could do something similar with the career and role categories? Granted, such a proposal would span many, many categories — and I'm still in the middle of discussing Category:Thieves! SolemnStormcloud (talk) 14:59, January 12, 2024 (EST)
Since it was done for elemental creatures, it would make sense to do the same for here. Super Mario RPG (talk) 15:01, January 12, 2024 (EST)
Would you be up to pitching this massive change to our status quo, or do you think someone else should propose this instead? SolemnStormcloud (talk) 12:38, January 14, 2024 (EST)
Donkey Kroc from the episode Ape-Nesia from the Donkey Kong Country television series
To be fair, DK was briefly a pirate in the cartoon episode "Ape-Nesia" after being fooled by Skurvy. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:24, January 14, 2024 (EST)
Video thumbnail showing Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show episode "Pirates of Koopa" This man owns a seedbox for anyone to use, and while he's torrenting, his download/upload ratio for all the several thousand files of Switch ROMs and illicit kpop and R&B girl group music he's seeding is 1:8. No I don't think Mario should be classed as a pirate even if he took a pirate alias in Pirates of Koopa. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! Give me some of those ROMs, now! Specifically the Mario and Sonic ones! Yeah, Mario shouldn't be in this category, I agree.SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) 09:36, May 23, 2024 (EDT)
Indeed, I think the only "pirate alias" character that should be classified is K. Rool, since it was important in the games he had it, and even when he doesn't, he still tends to hang out on a pirate ship. Maybe Wario too because his "Captain Wario" guise is somewhat important in Game & Wario... oh wait, that actually has its own page. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:34, January 14, 2024 (EST)
Yeah it was central to a plot of an entire game. Not like Bowser who's just playing pretend for the occasion. The guy couldn't even get himself a parrot, while Captain K. Rool tried to but found out he was allergic to pulviplumes found on Squawks. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! Wizard Mario from Mario Party 2. Taken from a screenshot.
Category:Magicians I also implore you to look at. The picture here should give you hint enough on how what kinds of characters are in there too. In fact just look at some subcategories in Category:Characters such as Category:Royalty (guess who's also categorized under this??) and anything in Category:Workers. I also believe it is a crime that in spite of all this, this wiki does not have a category on cowboys. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! Not to mention Category:Thieves, which I've since yielded from discussing. All. These. Categories. Need. A. Cleanup. EDIT: Oh, and don't forget Category:Forms. Now there's a gold mine for you. SolemnStormcloud (talk) 14:51, January 14, 2024 (EST)

Aside from the Mario Party 2 playable characters and Bowser, the only other entry in this category I take some objection to is Clawgrip. He talks like a pirate in Super Mario Advance and serves as one of King Koopa's minions in the two episodes of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! where the Koopa Pack don pirate alter egos, but is that enough? SolemnStormcloud (talk) 12:13, January 16, 2024 (EST)

Ember is also listed here. They are somewhat pirate-themed in TTYD, but not in the original Paper Mario. Oh, and also Lord Crump? He's here too for some reason. Maybe because him having a battleship or whatever? But that does not a pirate make. Blinker (talk) 12:42, January 16, 2024 (EST)
Artwork of Lord Crump from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
"It may be pretty obvious to you who I really am, but no telling Mario! Or else!"
To be fair, Embers play a far more significant role in The Thousand-Year Door than the original Paper Mario, so I can take or leave them in this category. Lord Crump, on the other hand, is only here because of his fourth-wall-breakingly poor disguise "Four-Eyes" in Chapter 5 and should probably be removed. SolemnStormcloud (talk) 14:28, January 16, 2024 (EST)
"Four-Eyes" isn't really a pirate though, just a sailor. I guess, THOSE Embers were (are?) pirates, but having Embers in general in the pirate category because of that seems weird. I suppose that depends on where you draw the line for these categories, but it feels like the Shy Guys in the thief category (except of course Embers only appear in these two games). Blinker (talk) 14:55, January 16, 2024 (EST)
In that case, Lord Crump can definitely be removed from this category. As for the Ember, I'm still uncertain. I don't want to include the standard Shy Guy in Category:Thieves, but the fact Embers only appear in two games with their more significant appearance being the one they serve as pirates complicates matters. I'd lean towards not including them if doing so would be arbitrary. SolemnStormcloud (talk) 15:23, January 16, 2024 (EST)
