First appearance Super Paper Mario (2007)

Fotons are enemies dwelling in Outer Space and in the Outer Limits, in the game Super Paper Mario. Early versions of these enemies also appeared in Fort Francis during production. Fotons look like floating yellow and white squares, and constantly shrink and grow rapidly; they can be as small as Mario or Luigi's fist, or they can be same size as the plumber himself. They attack by emitting small heated particles, and firing them at Mario and his allies. Fotons often fire several particles in a row, making those projectiles harder to dodge. Squirps's lasers can easily destroy these enemies. Their names are a corruption of "photon", the elementary particle of light, and also may be based on the fact that their projectiles look like electrons circling an atom. When Fleep's ability is used on a Foton, its eyes turn into stars.

Fotons also have a chance of dropping a Shooting Star upon defeat.
