Piscatory Pete meets Flopsy Fish[edit]

Despite the GBA Shogakukan guide having a separate entry for Piscatory Pete (albeit separated by an identifier), the SNES Shogakukan guide clearly considers it the same as Flopsy Fish. Merge to Cheep Cheep? LinkTheLefty (talk) 00:21, August 21, 2020 (EDT)

Yes, similar name, similar looks, and in Yoshi's New Island, they're replaced by green Cheep Cheeps. --JumpPumpkinPlant SMW.pngDarkNightPiranha Plant in Fall 00:46, August 21, 2020 (EDT)
Absolutely. While on the surface they don't look like "typical" Cheeps, they're clearly going off the weird design used in SMW. As for the separate design in general, Flopsy Fish was (aside from the "biting" pose) assembled from smaller graphics to make it animate more fluidly while Pete was made to fit in a 16x16 space to conserve space. The fact that YNI absolutely converged them makes this pretty clear-cut. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:18, August 21, 2020 (EDT)
I should add something that I hadn't taken into account before. In Yoshi's Island DS, the Island Museum gives separate displays to both fish in the aquatic-enemy exhibit. While a few related enemies like the Boos share the same display, different enemies generally get separate displays. What do you make of this? LinkTheLefty (talk) 16:59, November 14, 2020 (EST)
While i'm not too sure if the green Cheep Cheeps are actually a replacement to them or not, despite similar behavior, these guys are way too fishy to have a separate page... --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 12:53, June 5, 2021 (EDT)
Ps: May i add that the different design, seems to just be based off of the SMW's Cheep Cheep, and really, despite the appearance change to both Cheep Cheeps and these are VERY minor, physically, and that the color may just be based off of the environement (surface dweller, or underwater: red/blue or yellow gold, or something), and nothing from them really changed from the Cheep Cheeps from the main series, so keeping them split would be a quite dirty move. --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 12:59, June 5, 2021 (EDT)
@LTL Probably less to do with "relation" than the separate contexts they're found in. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 23:45, June 5, 2021 (EDT)
If this is gonna be merged, should we revisit the Bubble Dayzee case? --Green Yoshi FanOfYoshi 13:16, June 18, 2021 (EDT)

These things are just SMW2's take on submerged Cheep Cheeps, with "Flopsy Fish" being the jumpy kind. As explained above, they look different simply because Flopsy Fish uses assembled pieces (and a large rotating sprite) for its complex movement patterns (as part of showing off the smaller capabilities of the Super FX chip), while Piscatory Pete conserves graphic space for its simple movements with 16x16 pixel sprites, which appear to be inspired by the SMW Cheep Cheep sprite. Both are named Pukupuku in Japanese, while in the English YIDS guide, Piscatory Pete is called Cheep Cheep while Flopsy Fish remains separate. On that note, probably the only reason YIDS continued separating them graphically was the game's blatant laziness regarding reused assets. If that weren't enough, the blue Piscatory Petes are "replaced" with normal red Cheep Cheeps in YNI, effectively leaving it as no question they are and always were the same thing.
