Same character?[edit]

Is it really confirmed that the lighthouse keeper and DJ Toad are indeed the same characters? To me, it just looks like two characters with the exact same appearance, which isn't uncommon for Mario standards. That's exactly what I thought. Just because they're both purple Toads with sunglasses, doesn't mean they are the same person. Lots of different Toads use same designs. Mario jumping Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8
I'm not really buying it. If they were in the same game, it would seem a bit more likely that they're the same character fulfilling different roles in different places, but it seems likely they're separate characters and just have the same (very generic) design because the developers wanted a Toad with sunglasses, the lighthouse keeper from Color Splash coincidentally already had that design, and they decided to reuse that instead of making an entirely new design for what's essentially the same thing. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The Sunset Express conductor, Mustard Café chef, and Tangerino Grill Chef all have their designs re-used as well. I did consider that this was a different character, but he's not really given a name either (and "DJ Toad" is also an implied character in Paper Mario, anyways). Split Color Splash and Origami King characters[edit]

Settledproposal.svg This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit any of the sections in the proposal. If you wish to discuss the article, do so in a new header below the proposal.

split 9-0
It is highly unlikely that these Toads are the same character just because of the same design. They appear in seperate games and have different roles, even different personalities, not to mention the game takes place in a completely different location. I get the feeling that one other reason they are merged is because they don't have official names. The Origami King characters should be moved into their own articles. And this proposal also applies to the other Color Splash/Origami King Toads who have pages merged.

Support[edit]

  1. Keyblade Master (talk) Per proposal
  2. Toadette the Achiever (talk) Absolutely, though I don't see why this needs a proposal.
  3. TheFlameChomp (talk) This seems to me that this is a case where generic designs (just generic articles of clothing) are reused. These Toads have different roles than the similarly-designed Toads from Color Splash, so unless it is confirmed they are intended to be the same, I do not think we should assume they are the same just based on similar generic designs
  4. Duckfan77 (talk) Per all.
  5. Waluigi Time (talk) Per all.
  6. DarkNight (talk) Per all.
  7. LinkTheLefty (talk) The only thing in common is the character design.
  8. Mister Wu (talk) Agreed, while variants of Toads' designs tend to be rare in the new Paper Mario games, sharing a few generic traits isn't enough for them to be the same characters
  9. Pokemon (talk) Per all.

Comments[edit]

Why not split Merlon and the like as well? It's heavily implied that they, or at least their Super Paper Mario incarnations, are separate characters too. LinkTheLefty (talk) 11:13, July 21, 2020 (EDT)

That'd probably be up next on my agenda, depending on how well this proposal is received. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 11:28, July 21, 2020 (EDT)
I'd oppose that, as they are counterparts of the same name (and in the case of, say, Merluvlee, role), and tend towards the same personality. Also comparable to it being explicitly stated that not all Yoshis named "Yoshi" or Toads named "Toad" are the same precise individual, yet are merged because the role is the same and they are considered the same "character" as it were. And of course, who can forget classic vs. modern DK? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 11:37, July 21, 2020 (EDT)
I'm with Doc on this one, Merlon especially is three (at the most, possibly only two) pretty much identical versions of the same "base" character, with little differentiation between them. There's not really much to say about them as separate characters other than having each game covered in a separate place (or just SPM off on its own with PM and TTYD still merged), which isn't particularly helpful for organization. At the most I'd say mention on the articles that it's implied the SPM versions are separate characters and call it a day. It's not necessarily the best comparison, but I find it comparable to the extra Luigi in SMG, where it's shown that more than one version of the character exists but they're still the same character (though in that case, a theoretical split runs into the obstacle of figuring out which one is supposed to be "Luigi prime"). --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Nevermind, I misread the proposal and thought it was saying that The Origami King character also goes by the "lighthouse keeper". LinkTheLefty (talk) 14:55, July 21, 2020 (EDT)
