Spin Drill
- Not to be confused with Drill Spin, Skipdrill, or Drill Mario.
- “Well, well... What do we have here? A Spin Drill, huh? That's for digging?!”
- —Lubba, Super Mario Galaxy 2
The Spin Drill is an item in Super Mario Galaxy 2 that lets the user dig straight down through dirt by shaking the Wii Remote. It can be used to cross through to the opposite side of a planetoid, or to reach cavities inside. Using the Spin Drill doubles as an attack, defeating enemies standing where Mario or Luigi emerges. The Spin Drill ricochets off of hard materials such as metal; sloped hard surfaces underground can change the user's trajectory.
Despite being held (even making the same sound when picked up as a Green Shell), the Spin Drill functions as a power-up; it cannot be dropped unless the user gets hit, touches a Launch Star, or enters a Warp Pipe, and it disappears in the process. Holding a Spin Drill prevents Mario or Luigi from performing certain moves such as the crouch, Backward Somersault, and Long Jump, but they can still Side Somersault and Wall Jump.
The Spin Drill appears in the Spin-Dig Galaxy, the Supermassive Galaxy (to defeat three Big Koopa Troopas), the Flipsville Galaxy (during the "Flipsville's New Digs" and "Purple Coin Spin Speed Run" missions), the Cosmic Cove Galaxy (at the last planetoid of the "Exploring the Cosmic Cavern" mission), and Bowser's Galaxy Generator.
An item with a similar function, called the Drill Mushroom, appears in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
