Mario Super Sluggers
Mario Super Sluggers (Japanese: スーパーマリオスタジアム ファミリーベースボール, Super Mario Stadium Family Baseball) is the sequel to Mario Superstar Baseball, released on the Wii console. The game was announced on October 9, 2007, at a Nintendo conference. It was released in Japan on June 19, 2008[1] and will be expected in North America on August 25, 2008.[2]
Intro
Mario Super Sluggers begins with Toad, Daisy, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Birdo on a small cruiser riding to the baseball island. The cruiser arrives, and they meet up with Peach and Toadsworth at the entrance. They then follow to the lighthouse located at the Daisy Cruiser, which shows an overview of the whole island. From there, they run into the Mario Stadium holding Wii Remotes, and gazing out. Daisy takes her Wiimote and swings it, turning it into her bat. Luigi follows and Mario turns his into his ball and glove. Mario pitches to Daisy right away, and she makes a hit.
The scenes begin switching from stadium to stadium. Daisy's ball is chased after by Toads in the Peach Rink, where they run into Freezies. The ball then rolls onto Wario City, where Wario chases after it to find it shoot into the air from a manhole water spout. The ball lands on Wario's head, causing him to fall backwards, and causing the ball to fly into Yoshi Park. Yoshi jumps over a pipe to catch the ball, realizing he is going to fall, he flutters around, but falls in with the ball. The ball flies to Diddy Kong at DK Jungle, where he is about to be run over by a barrel, when Donkey Kong comes to Diddy's rescue by smashing it.
The view switches back to Mario Stadium, where Mario pitches to DK, who then makes a hit. Yoshi goes for the catch, but both Wario and Waluigi bombard him with bob-ombs. Yoshi slides to the catch regardless, throws it to Peach, who throws it to Mario, and then to Luigi on base. DK slams into Luigi, sending him into the field wall. As Daisy and Toad stand in alarm, the crowd follows suit, only to see Luigi stand and reveal that he has caught the ball. Lakitu calls it out, and everyone rushes to Luigi and Mario's side.
Gameplay
Mario Super Sluggers can be played using three different control methods:
- Wii Remote (vertical)
- Wii Remote (horizontal)
- Wii Remote + Nunchuk combo
In order to bat or pitch, the A button must be held and then the Wii Remote must be swung at the appropriate time. The more precise the hit/pitch, the further/faster the ball will go. The player can do curve balls as well by twisting the Wii Remote, while pitching. Once the ball is in a fielder's hand, the Remote must be swung so that the fielder can pitch the ball at one of the basemen. Some fielders can throw fast balls or Laser Balls in order to get to one of the basemen faster.
Star Skills will reappear in Super Sluggers as well. Any player can pitch or bat using Star Skills, however only Team Captains can use special hits/pitches. Team Players can only use Star skills that will make the ball go faster or slower.
Stadiums
There are 9 stadiums (excluding Toy Field) in all. Most of the 9 stadiums can be played in daytime or nighttime. Mario Stadium is the only stadium not to feature any gimmicks.
- Mario Stadium – The stadium features no gimmicks at all.
- Luigi's Mansion – If the ball reaches the bushes in the field, the ball will be harder to find. Also, if players touch one of the gravestones they'll get attacked by one of the generic ghosts from Luigi's Mansion, the game. This stadium can only be played at night.
- Peach Rink – The stadium floor is slippery and touching one of the Freezies will freeze players for a short time. In nighttime, if the ball touches one of the snowflakes hanging from the ceiling, the stadium will be pitch dark and the spotlights will only shine on the players. Shortly after, a spotlight will shine on the ball and after a short period of time, the room will be back to normal.
- Daisy Cruiser – Breakable dinning tables are scattered everywhere in the stadium, making it harder for the player to catch the ball. When playing a night game, Cheep Cheeps cover the outfield. Gooper Blooper often attacks the cruiser making the stadium tilt to the side it's being attacked. When this happens, the ball will slide towards the tilted side of the stadium.
- Yoshi Park – A train passes by every now and then making-it harder for the player to catch the ball. Hitting a pipe at day-time will cause it to warp somewhere else. Hitting one at night will cause a Piranha Plant to shoot out and grap the ball, warping it somewhere else as well. Also at night, the yoshi train turns into a much longer wiggler train.
- Wario City – Every now and then, the manholes will burst up water making the ball rebound high. Hitting arrows on the outfield will cause the ball to bounce in the direction the arrow is pointing.
- DK Jungle – DK Barrels pass by every now and then, making-it harder to catch the ball. Flowers also cover the outfield, with squirt out dizzying gas when approached. At night, the barrels are flaming and the flowers squirt out a gas that speeds up the player.
- Bowser Jr.'s Room – Landing the ball on a Chain Chomp pattern on the field causes a Chain Chomp to roam the stadium's field and might crush an outfielder. If the ball gets near a Bullet Bill pattern, a Bullet Bill will chase-down one of the fielders. This stadium can only be played in the day.
- Bowser Castle – Bowser Castle is the field you end up playing when you choose to play Bowser Jr.'s Room at night. Fireballs occasionally spurt out from the area outside the stadium. Big Bob-omb appears in the Koopa Clown Car and throws bob-ombs down at the outfielders. If a player gets too close to the Bowser Statue on the back of the stadium, while spitting fire, the player will get burned for a short period of time. This stadium can only be played in the night.
