Ring (projectile)
It has been requested that this article be rewritten and expanded to include more information. Reason: provide more info on Wendy's ring attacks in the more sparse Mario & Luigi sections
Candy rings[1], also referred to as deadly rings[2] and death rings[3], are circular projectiles that Wendy O. Koopa often shoots from her Magic Wand. They are named for their red and white stripes, much like a candy cane. They first appear along with Wendy in Super Mario Bros. 3.
History
Super Mario Bros. 3
When fighting Wendy aboard her airship in World 3-Airship, she shoots candy rings at Mario or Luigi; Wendy creates one at the beginning of the fight, and creates another after each stomp. Up to three candy rings can be on-screen at once; unlike her brothers' magic blasts, they do not leave the arena, instead bouncing off the walls, ceiling, and floor at right angles. The candy rings only disappear when she is defeated.
Mario & Luigi series
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions
During her boss fight in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its remake, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, Wendy flings large glowing rings from her wrists at Mario and Luigi. They must be dodged by jumping twice, and may inflict the Heavy G status if they hit. As of this game, they are now golden, matching her bracelets, instead of red and white.
In the original game, the rings attempt to hit the Mario Bros. by floating towards them; Wendy then raises her hands again, causing them to close in and shrink on the Bros. In the remake, Wendy constantly attacks alongside her doppelgangers, and they now each create a ring before sending them at the Bros. in a certain order; once all the rings have surrounded them both, each Wendy then closes the rings in the same order, requiring Mario and Luigi to jump over them accordingly.
In the remake's Minion Quest sub-mode, Wendy also uses her rings to attack.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
During the battle against Wendy and Roy Koopa in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Wendy uses her rings as her only solo attack.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey
In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, Wendy once again uses her rings to attack.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Candy rings once again return in New Super Mario Bros. Wii in both of Wendy's battles, where they function the same as in Super Mario Bros. 3, though they are slower and vanish after a while.
New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Candy rings return in New Super Mario Bros. U. During her boss fight, Wendy now throws two rings at a time, using them to knock loose the icicles hanging from the ceiling of her boss arena. After being stomped twice, she throws three candy rings.
Paper Mario: Color Splash
In Paper Mario: Color Splash, Wendy prepares to summon a giant golden ring upon taking enough damage. Mario must use the Instant Camera Thing to create a picture of himself that the ring traps instead of Mario; if Mario is caught in the ring, Wendy breaks it during the next turn by summoning a shower of coins that instantly KOs Mario upon falling on him.
