Candy (Mario Party 8)
- “You're no sucker! Smart players don't rely on luck! They change their fate with Candy! Eat Candy before you hit your Dice Block to trigger one of many effects!”
- —MC Ballyhoo, Mario Party 8
Candies are special items found in Mario Party 8. Replacing the Orbs of Mario Party 6 and Mario Party 7, players can collect and eat the Candies found throughout the boards to either help themselves or hinder the progress of their opponents. Upon eating Candy, a player will either change their physical appearance for a short time, or receive an enhanced ability of some nature. A single player can hold up to three candies, while a two-player team can hold up to five. If a player has too much candy, they have to discard one of their candies to make room for the new treat.
While free Candies can be earned by passing over Candy Areas, there is no way to determine which Candy a player will receive upon crossing one. However, players can also visit Candy Shops, where they may purchase a Candy of their choice in exchange for coins. Unlike the Orbs and Capsules of the three previous installments, Candies cannot be thrown onto Blue Spaces and Red Spaces to create Character Spaces or roadblocks; as such, they instead function like the items from the first, second, third, and fourth installments in the Mario Party series.
Additionally, the grand prize awarded to the winner of the Star Battle Arena is a year's supply of Candy.
Types of Candy
Red Candies
Red Candies affect the Dice Block.
Twice Candy
- Main article: Twice Candy
Twice Candy allows the player to roll two Dice Blocks instead of one when eaten. The player can move 2-20 spaces. If the player rolls the same numbers, they get 10 coins. Rolling two "7's" gives the player 30 coins. It costs 5 coins to buy in the Candy Shop.
Thrice Candy
- Main article: Thrice Candy
Thrice Candy allows the player to roll three Dice Blocks instead of one when eaten. The player can move 3-30 spaces. If the player roll the same numbers, they get 30 coins; rolling three "7's" gets the player 100 coins. It costs 20 coins (sometimes 15) to buy in the shop.
Slowgo Candy
- Main article: Slowgo Candy
Slowgo Candy allows the player to be able to roll a Dice Block that scrolls through the numbers more slowly (like the Slow Shroom Orb from Mario Party 7). But the numbers allowed to be rolled are 1-5 instead of 1-10 (for a total of 1-5 spaces). The Candy is useful when the player is near a special space, such as a Lucky Space or a DK Space. It costs 10 or 15 coins in the shop.
Green Candies
Green Candies affect the player and/or the other players just before the player rolls the Dice Block.
Springo Candy
- Main article: Springo Candy
Springo Candy allows the player to move to another player's space without affecting him or her. The player must first throw a dart at a wheel with the other characters' faces on it. Depending on who the dart hits, the player will spring (using his or her spring-like body) to that player's space. In Tag Battle Mode, the player cannot bounce to their teammate's spot; only one of the players on their opposed team. After that, the player will roll the Dice Block. It costs 10 or 20 coins if bought at a shop.
Vampire Candy
- Main article: Vampire Candy
Vampire Candy allows the player to turn into a vampire-like version of himself or herself and steal coins from other players. First, the player must throw a dart at a wheel with portions of how many coins he or she will steal. Depending on what the dart hits, the player will steal that many coins from all the other players. However, they can't steal coins from their teammate on Tag Battle Mode; only their opposed team opponents (as a team on Tag Battle shares their coin and star total). It costs 10 coins if bought at a shop.
Cashzap Candy
- Main article: Cashzap Candy
Cashzap Candy allows the player to attack a player and destroy their coins, but not steal them. The player must throw a dart at a wheel with the other characters' faces on it, and, depending on who the dart hits, the player will attack that other player with lightning, causing him or her to lose half of his or her coins. It costs about 15 or 20 coins to buy.
Yellow Candies
Yellow Candies affect the player and/or the other players while the player moves across the board.
Bowlo Candy
- Main article: Bowlo Candy
Bowlo Candy allows the player to turn into a ball version of himself or herself (much like Mario's form in Mario Pinball Land), and is able to steal 10 coins from each player (except their own teammate on Tag Battle; as a team shares their coin and star total) which they hit while moving across the board. It costs 5 or 10 coins if bought at a shop.
Bloway Candy
- Main article: Bloway Candy
Bloway Candy allows the player's legs to turn into a mini-tornado and sends any opponent they touch while moving across the board back to the start. It costs 10 coins if bought at a shop.
Bitsize Candy
- Main article: Bitsize Candy
Bitsize Candy allows the player to turn into an 8-bit version of themselves. While moving across the board, the player can hit a block from each space he or she passes that releases 3 coins. This is useful for collecting coins while traveling to Stars that cost coins, such as in DK's Treetop Temple, King Boo's Haunted Hideaway, Shy Guy's Perplex Express, and Koopa's Tycoon Town. It can't be bought at a shop; it is only hidden on a Candy Space.
Weeglee Candy
- Main article: Weeglee Candy
Weeglee Candy allows the player to turn into three tiny versions of himself or herself, and is able to steal a random Candy from each player they pass by (if they have any) while moving across the board.
Blue Candies
Blue Candies are similar to Yellow Candies, but blue ones have a larger effect on other players.
Thwomp Candy
- Main article: Thwomp Candy
Thwomp Candy allows the player to turn into a stone head, and he or she is able to make any players he or she passes by while moving across the board each lose half of their coins. It costs about 10 coins if bought at a shop.
Duelo Candy
- Main article: Duelo Candy
Duelo Candy allows the player to duel the first person he or she encounters while moving across the board. Whoever wins the duel minigame gets to throw a dart at a wheel with coins and Stars. Depending on what the dart hits, the loser gives coins or Stars to the winner of the minigame. However, after dueling, the player loses all their dice rolls and remains on the space the other player is on instead of continuing the Dice Block move. It costs 10 or 20 coins if bought at a shop. Also, unlike the Twice Candy, no bonus is given even if the player rolls doubles.
Bowser Candy
- Main article: Bowser Candy
Bowser Candy allows the player to transform into Bowser, roll two Dice Blocks (for a total of 2-20 spaces), and steal two Stars from each player he or she passes by. This Candy is only found in Bowser's Warped Orbit. It costs 15 or 20 coins if bought at a shop (10 coins for last place players). On Battle Royale, the player can get six stars if they catch all three opponents (six stars; 2 from each opponent).
Bullet Candy
- Main article: Bullet Candy
Bullet Candy allows the player to transform into a Bullet Bill-like version of himself or herself, roll three Dice Blocks (for a total of 3-30 spaces), and steal one Star from each player he or she passes by. This Candy is only found on Bowser's Warped Orbit. It costs 15 or 20 coins if bought at a shop (10 coins for last place players). On Battle Royale, the player can get three stars if they catch all three opponents (three stars; 1 from each opponent).
