For a long time, it's been listed that a Troopa's shell is broken during that one cutscene in Brawl, but I've never seen it as that. I've always seen the Troopa getting knocked partially underground, with the things surrounding him not being shell pieces, but small piles of dirt....exactly like what happens during one of DK's actual in-game moves.
