Summary

Storyline transcription from the Mario & Wario instruction booklet (pg. 2):

ものがたり

ここは妖精の森。この森の奥には妖精が住んでいて、その姿を見た者は幸せになれる、という言い伝えがあります。ある日マリオは、伝説の妖精を探しに森にやってきみました。ピーチやヨッシー、ルイージもいっしょ……だったはずですが、あれっ、ルイージの姿が見えません。マリオたち3人は、手分けして迷子のルイージを探すことになりました。

と、上空にあやしいエンジンの音。なんということでしょう。愛機ブルドッグ号に乗ったワリオが現れ、空からバケツをほうり投げてきました。
「ヒュー、ズポッ！」
おっと、バケツはマリオの頭にスッポリ命中。
「うわー、これじゃなんにも見えないよー」

これを見ていた森の妖精ワンダ。なんとか助けてあげたいけれど、小さな妖精にはバケツをはずす力はありません。そこでワンダは、魔法のつえでマリオに合図を送り、ルイージのもとへ案内してあげることにしたのですが……。 Storyline from the Mario & Wario instruction booklet (pg. 2).

Translation:

Welcome to the Fairy Forest. In the thick of these woods live pixies who, as the legends say, bring happiness to all who behold them. One day Mario came to this forest to search for these fabled sprites. He was accompanied by the Princess, Yoshi and Luigi... Well, at least the first two. There was no sign of Luigi. So Mario and his two friends decided to search all over the forest for him.

Suddenly, the roar of an unusual engine sounded through the skies. What was that? It was Wario--flying his airplane, the Bulldog, and throwing buckets from the sky.

"Take that!"

One of the buckets landed right over Mario's head!

"Oh no, now I can't see a thing!"

Wanda, one of the fairies in this forest, was watching this. She somehow wanted to help, but as small as she was, she had no power to remove that huge bucket. Wanda could only send signals to Mario using her magic stick, to point him to where his last brother was wandering...
