Super Smash Bros. is a fighting game for the Nintendo 64 created by Nintendo and HAL. All the fighters are famous Nintendo characters from the company's various franchises. Players must defeat their opponents multiple times in a fighting frenzy of items, power-ups, an original health system, in outrageous Nintendo-themed levels.

Even though Super Smash Bros. is not a part of the Mario franchise, the game is heavily influenced by the Marioverse (more so than any other franchise).

Playable Characters

  • Mario from the Mario series. He is a balanced fighter, with no significant strengths or weaknesses. Mario is good choice for beginners. However, once his combos are mastered, he can become a deadly weapon.
  • Yoshi from the Mario and Yoshi series. He uses egg-based attacks.
  • Donkey Kong from the Mario and Donkey Kong series. DK is a heavyweight and very strong.
  • Kirby from the Kirby series. He possesses a multitude attacks.
  • Samus Aran from the Metroid series. She uses many advanced long-range weapons.
  • Fox McCloud from the Star Fox series. He has weak attacks but is one of the fastest characters in the game.
  • Link from the Legend of Zelda series. He uses a range of weapons and fights with his sword. Link has one of the worst jumps in the game.
  • Pikachu from the Pokemon series. Pikachu is agile and uses electricity attacks.

*Spoiler Alert: Secret Characters*

  • Jigglypuff from the Pokemon series. A secret character who uses sleep attacks.
  • Luigi from the Mario series. A secret character who has similar attacks to Mario. Unlike his brother, Luigi has a fire uppercut attack. Also, he has poor traction and his fireballs have less range, but they aren't affected by gravity. Luigi cannot take as much damage as Mario can. He jumps a bit higher, too
  • Ness from the EarthBound/Mother series. A secret character that "learned" the attacks PK Fire and PK Thunder just for this game.
  • Captain Falcon from the F-Zero series. A secret character. He is fast and powerful.

Arenas

There are eight selectable arenas in Super Smash Bros. Four of them are Mario-themed; one is set in a floating arena high above Peach's Castle; another is an unlockable stage, set in an arena that looks like it was taken straight out of the original Super Mario Bros., complete with brick blocks, falling platforms, Warp Pipes (with Piranha Plants), and 8-bit Goombas and Koopas in the background. The third arena is based on Yoshi's Story, with Fly Guys and Goonies flying about in the sky, the Super Happy Tree in the background of the arena, and cloud platforms that vanish when stood on for too long. The Yoshi's Story stage reappeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee. The fourth is Kongo Jungle, which has two elevating platforms, two platforms high above the level, and a barrel cannon at the bottom of the stage.

Items

Several items in the game are Mario-based. These include:
