- Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games was released on the Nintendo 3DS in America on March 18, 2016.
- The My Nintendo rewards program launched in Japan on March 17, 2016. Several Mario games were released as purchasable rewards, including a digital download of the Nintendo DS game WarioWare: Touched! (pictured) for the Nintendo 3DS. On the same day, Super Mario Kart was released on the New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in Europe and Australia.
- Game & Watch Gallery 4 was released on the Wii U Virtual Console in Japan on March 16, 2016.
- Super Mario Advance, Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 and Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 were released on the Wii U Virtual Console in Europe and Australia on March 10, 2016.
- In the March 3rd Nintendo Direct, footage of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and Paper Mario: Color Splash for Wii U, a new update for Super Mario Maker, and Western localizations of Rhythm Heaven Megamix for the Nintendo 3DS were announced. Super Mario World was also released on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console exclusively for New Nintendo 3DS shortly after the presentation.
