Rainbow Cruiser
The Rainbow Cruiser is an airship that first appeared in Super Mario 64, though it has made cameo appearances in later games as well. Originally located in the course Rainbow Ride, the Rainbow Cruiser is usually a large wooden ship kept in mid-air by a series of row-like wings.
History
Super Mario 64
The Rainbow Cruiser first appeared in Super Mario 64 in the course Rainbow Ride. To access the ship, Mario is required to navigate a Magic Carpet ride that passes a large spinning contraption and a number of low blocks, then quickly get onto and off of a set of Donut Lifts. The ship itself has a constant wind that blows across the deck, as well as a pair of Bob-ombs on it.
The course's first Power Star, Cruiser Crossing the Rainbow, is located on the front of the Rainbow Cruiser. Other than the Star, the ship holds a ring of coins around the mast and two 1-Up Mushrooms: one on the ship's prow and another gained from doing a handstand on its mast. In addition, the cannon on the ship's rear is essential to reaching the platform holding the course's sixth star.
One of the minigames in Super Mario 64 DS, Bob-omb Squad, features the Rainbow Cruiser in a cameo appearance. The bottom of the ship occasionally appears on the top of the screen, and it is thus implied to be what is dropping the Para-bombs. As this minigame reappears in New Super Mario Bros., so does the Rainbow Cruiser.
Mario Party
The Rainbow Cruiser makes a cameo appearance in Mario Party. At the end of a game on the Luigi's Engine Room board, the board is revealed to be inside the Rainbow Cruiser.
Super Smash Bros. series
A heavily-redesigned Rainbow Cruiser appears as part of the stage Rainbow Cruise in Super Smash Bros. Melee. This version of the ship is far more elaborate, having a more complex design compared to the simple wooden ship from Super Mario 64, and also adds various propellers. The ship is also much smaller compared to how it was in Super Mario 64.
The Rainbow Cruiser and a few platforms above it act as the first portion of the Rainbow Cruise stage. Once the ship has advanced a significant amount, it crashes into the rest of the course, forcing the fighters to abandon it for the course's scrolling section. Despite crashing, the ship reappears again at the end of the scrolling section, and the stage loops to how it started.
Picross NP
Picross NP was a series of eight Japan-only picross games released on Nintendo Power cartridges over the course of 1999 and 2000. Each game in the series, named Vol. 1-8, was based off a different Nintendo game series. Only Vol. 2, 6, 7, and 8 were based off games in the extended Mario series. Other volumes were based on such series as Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda, and Star Fox. Despite the fact they were obstinantly based on a certian game or series, this aspect only showed in the "Character" set of puzzles, all other puzzles were generic, unrelated objects.
Gameplay
The objective of each logic puzzle is to reveal a hidden picture in a grid by scraping specific squares of it. Each puzzle starts with an empty grid and several numbers are given at the side of each horizontal row and vertical column of the grid. The numbers tell the player how many squares have to be scraped in each line. The revealed pictures show food, animals and other objects, but also make some Mario series references.
For example, a "5" means that the player has to scrape five consecutive squares in the respective line. If there is more than one number, then there has to be at least one blank square between the scraped areas. For instance, "4 6 2" means that four consecutive squares have to be scraped in the line, followed by at least one blank square. After the blank space(s), the player has to scrape an area of six squares. Again, there has to be at least one blank square between this area and the last two consecutive squares that have to be scraped. If the player is sure that a square doesn't have to be scraped, e.g. when a blank square is needed or all required squares in a line have been scraped, he or she can mark it with an "X". Finally, the player will be able to reveal the hidden picture by logic thinking.
Picross NP Vol. 2
Picross NP Vol. 2 was released on June 1, 1999. It was primarily based off Yoshi's Story, with some puzzles representing objects from earlier games.
