- Super Mario Sunshine (pictured) is the only Mario 3D game that does not begin with Peach sending Mario a note, and the only 3D game in which Peach's Castle doesn't appear.
- The Wii U is the first Nintendo home console since the SNES to share a portion of its name with its predecessor.
- A Koopa Troopa makes a cameo in the NES game Zoda's Revenge: Startropics II when a man who is riding him delivers pizza to the protagonist, Mike Jones.
- Super Mario 3D Land is the first Mario platformer game since Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins where Mario cannot perform a Triple Jump (released 19 years prior). It's also the first 3D Mario platformer game where he cannot perform this move.
