MarioWiki:Anniversary/2012
See festivities from 2010
AboutThe Super Mario Wiki was created on August 12th, 2005, 13:47 EDT. On August 12th, 2006, this wiki was off to a good start, but still there was only a small amount of active users. On Saturday August 11th, 2007 with a userbase finally forming, we celebrated our wiki's existence with an awards show on 30 of our favorite Mario topics, including favorite games, music, items, series, moments, enemies, and more. In 2008, we expanded this magnificent event by including much of our userbase with Userpedia Awards I, and on August 8th, 2008, it turned out to be an even bigger success. 2009 saw our first Fail Awards and 2010 included the first 'Shroom Awards. 2011 brought along game tournaments, a Mafia game and prizes for participation and success in said events. This year should be an even better celebration, with an experienced Awards Committee and an ever-growing Wiki. We have over 100,000,000 page views and nearly 12,000 articles, as well as more active users than ever. This year's celebration should be a blast! Awards CommitteeAs veterans may have come here to do, it's time – Awards Committee sign-up! This is the only sign-up right now. What the committee decides over the next 10-12 weeks will influence what other sign-ups will come in June, but we will have exact dates of things for you well in advance, so watch this page to keep track of announcements. There are a few minimal requirements to be an AC member this year:
To sign up, send a PM to Ralphfan letting him know that your are intersted in joining the committee. This is just to make sure that the people that want to sign up will be able to attend consistently and conduct themselves properly. Ralph will also be contacting some users through either chat or the forums that will be given an invite to the committee. Mainly, the AC decides what awards will be voted on in June. However, there are important matters as well, see below the sign-up list. Userpedia AwardsThe user-based wiki, Userpedia, has been featured in the ceremony since Mario Awards II. However, the amount of awards, categories of awards and quality of said categories have fluctuated in the past four years. The inclusion or exclusion of the Userpedia Awards will be one of the first things determined by the Awards Committee this year. NOTE: Game tournaments are not a guarantee for Mario Awards VI. The Awards Committee will determine the inclusion or exclusion of these functions. Fail AwardsIn 2009, the Awards Committee decided to introduce a new category into the awards ceremony: Fail Awards. These awards are similar to the Mario Awards, in that they are based solely on the Mario (and relative) series. However, these awards pertain to the worst of the worst. (As the name implies.) Entries may include "Worst Game" or "Worst Character", for example. We went from 10 to 15 Fail Awards in 2011, though it remains to be seen whether we will have 10 or 15 this year. 'Shroom AwardsMuch discussion has been going on about the recognition of our local paper in the awards ceremony. There were 5 'Shroom Awards in Mario Awards IV and 10 in Mario Awards V. Their inclusion has not been determined yet. It will be one of the first matters that the Awards Committee will cover. Game Tournaments and Other EventsMario Awards III featured our first tournament, a Mario Kart tournament. There were no game tournaments in Mario Awards IV, but in Mario Awards V, Baby Mario Bloops (talk) hosted a Brawl tournament. We hope to have at least one game tournament this year. Anyone wishing to organize a tournament, whether they are an AC member or not, should contact Ralph to get everything organized. We will once again have our "Guess the Results" contest to go with this year's Award polls, and an Awards Mafia II game will be hosted by Ralph! One of the best parts of last year's events was that we were able to give prizes to the participants who performed well in the Brawl tournament, Mafia Game and Guess the Results contest. We hope to be able to give away prizes to the winners this year as well. Anyone who would like to donate prizes to be given out is more than welcome to do so. Please contact Ralph if you would like to supply prizes. Recommended items include Steam points, Nintendo points, iTunes cards or gift cards to any other online site or store. Any donation would be highly appreciated. ContactMario Awards on Twitter You are free to bring up anything with us if you feel it appropriate. Suggestions to make the awards more interesting?
