Super Mario RPG 2 was the original name for Paper Mario. It had to be changed when Square and Nintendo, the co-developers of Super Mario RPG, split. Because Super Mario RPG was owned by both companies, it was not legal for Nintendo to release a direct sequel without Square's consent. So, changing some aspects of the game, most notably the name, Nintendo released Paper Mario.
