Swooper
Swoopers are bat enemies that appear in Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Paper Mario, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Super Mario 64 DS, New Super Mario Bros., Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, Super Paper Mario, and Super Mario Galaxy. They also make a cameo appearances in Mario Party 8 and Mario Kart Wii.
In Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. they would hang on the ceiling and when Mario or Luigi came near, they would try and hurt Mario or Luigi. They do the same thing in Super Mario 64 and Super Paper Mario.
According to their Super Paper Mario catch card, Swoopers aren't bad. They are just very lonely and their way of greeting people is by snacking on their head.
Sub-Species
- Swoopula: A Swooper found mostly in Palaces. It sucks Mario's HP to add to its own. It's name is a pun on Dracula, the famous vampire.
- Swampire: A feared Swooper that lives in the darkness. The strongest Swooper. It sucks Mario or his partner's HP to add to its own. The name of this enemy is a pun on the word "Vampire".
- Fang: Not exactly a sub-species, but it could possibly be related to the Swooper.
Notable Swoopers
Games
Super Mario World
In the game Swoopers would stand on the ceiling waiting for Mario or Luigi to come. When they come near the Swoopers would fly down and try to hurt Mario or Luigi. They could easily be defeated. They would be found in Vanilla Dome.
Hotel Mario
In this game, Swoopers were called Pat-the-Bats. They swooped down from ceilings and attacked Mario and Luigi, impeding their progress. They could also open doors upon contact.
Super Mario 64
Found in Hazy Maze Cave, these Swoopers were called Swoops and were recolored and made blue, not green. (This would go on to be their color scheme in future appearances.) Like in Super Mario World, they would be on the ceiling waiting for Mario to come so they would attack.
New Super Mario Bros.
Like in Super Mario 64 , they would be on the ceiling waiting to attack. They were only found in underground stages. Their design was extremely similar to their design in Super Mario 64
Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis
This time the Swoopers were not on the roof, but flying around. They only appeared in a boss fight against Donkey Kong trying to attack the Mini-Marios.
Mario Party 8
In their first appearance in the Mario Party series, Swooper is actually just cameo in the game. They appear on the wrapper of the Vampire Candy. The Swoopers appearing on the wrapper are blue, making them look like the Super Mario 64 and Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2 versions of Swoopers.
Super Mario Galaxy
Bat enemies which resemble Swoopers appear in Super Mario Galaxy. They are brown and will swoop at Mario when he approaches. There is also a cyan ice variation that will freeze Mario on contact for a few seconds. Also, the only way to kill them is to be Fire Mario, since the other Marios will only knock them back. Not even a Star Bit can kill them.
Mario Kart Wii
Swoopers appear on the track Wario's Gold Mine. As racers enter various parts inside the mine, Swoopers drop from the ceiling and fly forward, slowing down anyone who hits them. They also appear inside Dry Dry Ruins, where they fly throughout the ruins.
