Fire Mario
Fire Mario, shooting a fireball.

When Mario or Luigi come in contact with a Fire Flower, they can become Fire Mario or Fire Luigi, respectively. Wario was also able to transform into Fire Wario in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.

This form was introduced in Super Mario Bros. where Mario and Luigi's shirts and hats would change to white and their overalls would change to their respective colors (red for Mario and green for Luigi) and they would gain the power to throw fireballs which could topple otherwise unbeatable enemies (such as Spinies) and would be the only way to defeat enemies in underwater stages. However, the form was lost if Mario (or Luigi) were to take damage.

Wario's Fire transformation didn't change the colors of his clothes. It simply added a feather to it's cap, probably because of the Game Boy's monochrome screen, since in this game, Fire Mario has a feather on his cap too. Besides this, Fire Wario has also the ability to shoot fireballs, which are much bigger than Mario or Luigi's.

This is one of the few forms to appear outside its introductory game but is often downplayed in favor of newer power-ups.

This form made its first 3-D platformer appearance in Super Mario Galaxy which featured a few changes, such as the form now being time-limited instead of lost by taking damage and that the fireballs were extinguished by water. Mario could throw fireballs with the Star Spin.

In the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, this form was called Super Mario or Super Luigi, while that usually is the name of the status when using a mushroom. The term "super" could just be tacked on to signify that they are stronger. Toad turned into this form in the episode "The Fire of Hercufleas". Princess Toadstool turned into this form in "The Trojan Koopa", although she did not shoot fire.

Strangely, the comics almost never featured either form. The only appearance was in the prologue short, "The Legend"; in one panel, Luigi was shown throwing fireballs at some Beezos, but he was wearing his regular outfit rather than his Fire Luigi suit.

Trivia

  • In Super Mario Bros. Fire Mario was known as Firey Mario and had white overalls and a red shirt instead of red overalls and a white shirt in later games.
  • Mario has previously been able to use Fire without being Fire Mario, However those instance were when power-ups didn't appear, such as Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars or Super Smash Bros.. Also, Mario could create a fireballs using the aquired Firebrand skill in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
  • In Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi could use fire balls when using the brothers items, Bros. Flower and the Mix Flower.
  • Fire Mario and Fire Luigi appear as alternate colors for Mario and Luigi in Super Smash Bros. Brawl
  • In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, Bowser could also take on this form, where his skin turned orange, and Mario or Luigi would have an orange cap and shirt with red overalls. This colorization was likely based on the appearance of Fire Mario/Luigi in SMB3, which may have been caused by NES graphic limitations.
