Footrace with Koopa the Quick is the second mission of the Bob-omb Battlefield in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. It involves racing Koopa the Quick to the top of the mountain, where the Big Bob-omb was fought in Big Bob-omb on the Summit, and it can be completed only after that mission is completed.

Layout

When Mario enters the mission, Koopa the Quick is waiting nearby. If Mario talks to him, he asks about Mario's victory against the Big Bob-omb. He says that Mario would have to be fairly strong and fast to defeat the Big Bob-omb but that he is slower than Koopa. He then challenges Mario to a race towards the top of the mountain. When the race starts, Mario has to make it to the top and touch a flagpole at the summit's center. The cannons cannot be used, as Koopa accuses Mario of trying to scam him if Mario jumps into a cannon at any point during the race. However, Mario is allowed to enter the iron balls' alcove midway up the mountain and warp to the other alcove close to the mountaintop. If Mario loses the race, Koopa boasts about his victory, and he cannot be rechallenged until the mission is restarted. If Mario wins, Koopa admits that Mario is fast and rewards him a Power Star.

The mission is slightly different in Super Mario 64 DS. If Yoshi, Luigi, or Wario talks to Koopa, Koopa asks him to bring Mario to him. If Mario (or one of the other characters wearing Mario's cap) talks to him, he says that Mario has "put on a few pounds" since the last time he saw him. Koopa then decides that a race to the top of the Bob-omb Battlefield's mountain will be good exercise. The same rules still apply; however, if the other characters lose Mario's cap and finish the race, Koopa asks where Mario is before believing that Mario abandoned the race due to Koopa's superior speed.
