The Awazon river basin[1] is the main setting of Virtual Boy Wario Land, where Wario travelled prior to the events of the game to take a vacation. However, only a small area within it is seen, in the intro and ending cutscenes, since the game primarily takes place deep underground. Its name refers to the Amazon River, but the M is flipped to a W, similar to Wario's and Mario's names.
The story is initiated here when Wario, after being woken from his nap by a beaver, spots three Mask-Guys carrying treasure chests into a cave behind a nearby waterfall, referred to as the Aldegara Waterfall in the manual. Wario manages to catch up with the Mask-Guys, only to come across a large vault where the treasure chests were stored. Before Wario is able to open it, however, the ground beneath him crumbles away, sending him plummeting to the bottom of a series of underground caverns. He is eventually able to escape after defeating the final boss, Demon Head. Afterwards, Wario decides to leave the river basin, with his mode of transportation depending on the amount of treasure and coins collected.
