Please avoid adding filler in your writing (making your writing too wordy) and changing valid words and phrases around unnecessarily (especially into a more casual tone). A lot of your edits, including your anonymous ones, have consisted of this; for example, changing "fell through" to "declared impossible" (even though that's not what they explicitly said) and "too far in" into an unnecessarily more informal "incredibly deep in", and edits here (the part about Chrom), here (which could have been cut down without the first part), and here ("fulfil the expectations and hopes of representing" is flowery writing and completely unnecessary; just say "represent"). Your rewriting of the Melee pre-release content page also removed formatting for game titles and you also forgot to italicise game titles yourself despite being reminded already. Sorry, I will not do it again. ItsMarioTime! (talk) 02:11, August 31, 2021 (EDT)
You posted on the wrong page; my talk page is the "JC" in my signature, not the Shy Guy sprite, which is a file page. To answer your question, no, calling something (an action) unnecessary is not rude, it's just saying something is not needed, which I meant with some of your edits. Calling someone would be. Mario JC 02:53, August 31, 2021 (EDT)
Okay, thanks! Because I'm starting to get so tired of my edits being called unnecessary all the time. ItsMarioTime! (talk) 08:02, August 31, 2021 (EDT)
Your edits on Chrom and Kazuya Mishima are what I'm talking about. On Chrom, you basically changed what the article already said but stretching it longer, which was what I was referring to when I said your edits are too wordy. There's nothing wrong with being concise and to-the-point without using too many words. Also:
- "but Sakurai ultimately chose Robin instead, as he felt that Chrom would play too similarly to Marth and Ike, however, Robin would not" You added the bolded part in, which isn't necessary; it's obvious Robin was chosen because he wouldn't play similarly. Leave readers to infer from the information.
- Similarly: "Sakurai claimed he had considered either Kazuya Mishima or Heihachi Mishima to serve as the Tekken fighter, this means he had a choice of either picking Kazuya or Heihachi" is repeating the same sentence in different words; avoid repetitive edits like this.
Also, don't italicise character names like Robin, Kazuya etc. Only the game titles are italicised. Mario JC 09:10, September 1, 2021 (EDT)
Same with Incineroar: "Incineroar was intended to be left out and replaced by Decidueye as the new Pokémon fighter from Generation 7, however, Sakurai decided to have a change of plan: Because Decidueye would play too similarly to an already-existing fighting style, Incineroar was used instead." - The "Sakurai had a change of plan" does not need to be there at all and makes it sound casual.
Finally, do not add information that's not mentioned in the sources you cited, please. The references don't say anything about Decidueye playing too similar to other fighters. Mario JC 09:29, September 1, 2021 (EDT)
I think I am taking the sources a little bit too seriously. I don't see anything wrong with the edits, it's just stretching what Sakurai said, we all make mistakes! I'll just remember that the point has been made and it doesn't need stretching. Here's what you're saying:
- Chrom - Chrom was just considered a playable character, but Sakurai instead chose Robin as he felt that Chrom would play too similarly to Marth and Ike, which is true, but it was stretched further.
- Kazuya Mishima - All Sakurai said was that Kazuya was chosen as the Tekken fighter over Heihachi Mishima, due to the Devil Gene making Kazuya stand out more.
- Incineroar - Sakurai never said that Decidueye was going to replace Incineroar, he just stated that he almost chose Decidueye as the new Pokémon fighter, but Sakurai chose Incineroar instead because he had never done a professional-wrestler character before. Also, there are actually very few cases of a character replacing another character, like Lucas replacing Ness in Melee, which did not happen.
- Solid Snake - Snake appearing as a playable character in Melee was already mentioned at the start of his own page, it doesn't need to be explained two times.
Still, your advice is perfectly taken, like always. However, please stop getting tired of giving people the same advice, it doesn't really matter that much, just have a great day! ItsMarioTime! (talk) 10:52, September 1, 2021 (EDT)
- Yes, it does matter. Stretching what Sakurai said and jumping to conclusions is exactly what you should avoid, otherwise you risk spreading false information. Just paraphrase what he actually said without adding to it.
Mario JC 21:36, September 1, 2021 (EDT)
Uh-huh, I got that. I won't spread false information again. ItsMarioTime! (talk) 01:32, September 2, 2021 (EDT)

Unused Characters in Smash
An unused character in the Super Smash Bros. series is a character that was supposed to appear in a game, but was later taken out for multiple reasons, some of them may include time constraints, lack of popularity or technical issues. All 5 games are going to have their unused characters covered on this page.

Marth was originally considered to be a playable character in the first game, but he had to be scrapped due to time constraints.[1] Marth would later be playable in Melee.
Mewtwo was a planned playable character for the game, but was ultimately not added due to lack of development time.[2] Like Marth, Mewtwo would be playable in Melee.
Bowser was originally supposed to be a playable character in the game, but he was cut due to time constraints.[3] Bowser joined the roster in Melee. Similarly, King Dedede was actually playable at one point, but was absent from the final game due to time constraints.[4] Masahiro Sakurai also stated that Bowser and King Dedede were worked on in development and were "partially complete" at one point in time.[5] Unlike Marth, Mewtwo and Bowser, King Dedede was playable starting from Brawl.

Lucas, the main protagonist of Mother 3, was originally intended to replace Ness as a playable character, but when Mother 3 faced development issues and ended up getting ultimately cancelled for the Nintendo 64, it was decided to choose Ness instead.[6] Lucas later debuted in Brawl, but did not replace Ness.
Before Masahiro Sakurai ultimately selected the Ice Climbers to represent a retro game, he stressed that he had considered 5 other characters for the spot: The development team wished to include either Bubbles from Clu Clu Land, the player from Urban Champion, a Balloon Fighter, an Excitebike racer and Ayumi Tachibana from Famicom Detective Club.[7] Sakurai also considered Ayumi Tachibana as a playable character, but she was ultimately dropped as Sakurai felt the series would be very unfamiliar to an international audience.[8]
Sakurai stated that it would be difficult to include characters like Banjo and Kazooie and James Bond, not that they were considered to be playable. Banjo and Kazooie weren't included due to copyright issues with Square Enix,[9] and James Bond was not added due to concerns with realistic weapons.[10] Banjo and Kazooie became playable as DLC fighters in Ultimate.
Hideo Kojima reportedly requested Masahiro Sakurai to implement Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid into Super Smash Bros. Melee, but this idea was denied because development was too far in, and even adding another character was impossible.[11] Snake later debuted in Brawl. Similarly, the former head of Sonic Team, Yuji Naka, stated that Sonic the Hedgehog was a highly requested character for Melee, but was not included due to time constraints.[12] Sonic was playable starting from Brawl and onwards.
Wario was a planned character for the game, and he was strongly considered for Melee's roster, but was decided against due to time constraints and Sakurai felt the game would have too much Mario characters.[13] Sakurai also stressed that he would add Wario to Melee if he got time to add one more character. He also stated that he could have used development time allocated to either Mewtwo or Marth and Roy to implement Wario into the game instead, but he opted not to.[14] Wario later became playable in Brawl.

Reportedly, Pac-Man was suggested by Shigeru Miyamoto to be a third-party guest character in Brawl, however, Sakurai denied the request as he felt that Pac-Man appearing in his iconic pizza-shaped design seemed "too far-fetched".[15]
A Villager from Animal Crossing was considered a playable character in the planning stages of Brawl, but was ultimately rejected as Sakurai felt that "he wasn't suited for battle".[16]
Miis were briefly considered to be playable characters, but were ultimately not included as Sakurai felt that it didn't seem right at the time for Miis to be punching and kicking. They were also cut due to a lack of interest and fears of online bullying.[17] Pac-Man, Villager, and Miis were later playable in Smash 4.
A Nintendog was considered to be playable, but was dropped as Sakurai felt that such a character wasn't well-suited for battle (similar to the Villager) and it would work better as an Assist Trophy instead.[18]
Sakurai was asked if Ridley was considered a playable character, but Sakurai thought of making Ridley playable and considered it to be "impossible without putting his best efforts into it", he also felt that Ridley would be too slow for a fighter.[19] Ridley later debuted in Ultimate.
Sakurai wanted to make Geno a playable character, as he knew about the character's popularity and he could easily fit the theme of the games, plans for his inclusion ultimately fell through, presumably involving rights issues with Square Enix.[20]
Blastoise was considered to be part of Pokemon Trainer's team as a playable character, but Squirtle was used instead as Sakurai felt that Squirtle could establish itself as a character better than Blastoise, he also stated that it would be interesting and well-rounded to cover the various stages and sizes of the Pokemon.[21]
Dixie Kong was going to fight alongside Diddy Kong in the style of a tag-team, but the idea was later scrapped due to technical issues with the implementation of the idea.[22] It was decided to have Diddy Kong a solo fighter instead.
Sakurai explained that Krystal from the Star Fox series was considered a playable character. However, he instead chose Wolf, due to time constraints and it would only require 70% of the development needed to create a new character.[23]
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U

Takamaru, who was previously considered a potential fighter in Melee, was again briefly considered to be playable, but Sakurai cut him because he would not be popular enough,[24] resulting in his Assist Trophy role.
Chrom, one of the protagonists of Fire Emblem: Awakening, was briefly considered to be a playable character, as well as Sakurai coming up with a concept for his moveset. However, Sakurai chose Robin instead, as he felt that Chrom didn't have anything unique to offer over Marth and Ike, however, Robin did have uniqueness.[25] Chrom makes cameo appearances, appears as part of Robin's Final Smash, and made his debut in Ultimate.
Heihachi Mishima from the Tekken series was briefly considered to be playable, but was ultimately decided against as Sakurai felt that such a character's movements would be difficult to implement.[26] Luckily, Kazuya Mishima was added to Ultimate as a DLC fighter. In this case, Kazuya was ultimately included over Heihachi due to the Devil Gene making Kazuya more unique.
The Ice Climbers were planned to return as fighters, however, Sakurai managed to implement them perfectly on the Wii U version, but he could not get them to work on the Nintendo 3DS version no matter how much he tried, so he gave up on them and ultimately cut the Ice Climbers because he did not want the Wii U to have an extra character.[27] The Ice Climbers returned in Ultimate.
Datamining has revealed an unused emblem for a potential Rhythm Heaven character, meaning a character from the game was going to appear in the game, but was scrapped at some point in development.[28]
During the development of Super Smash Bros. 4, Sakurai explained that Reggie Fils-Aime, Shigeru Miyamoto and the now-deceased Satoru Iwata were almost added to the game, but they were all scrapped because they would not appeal to a wide audience, it would also take a lot of work and effort to add a character to the game, it was also not a decision to take lightly.[29]
Ridley and Geno were again planned to be playable, but neither of them were added in the final release. More specifically, Sakurai stated that getting Ridley to fly during development would be difficult.[30] Ridley finally debuted in Ultimate.

- Rex (Xenoblade Chronicles 2)
Scrapped
- Decidueye
- Heihachi Mishima
Alucard was briefly considered to be playable, as fans recognized him very well, but Simon and Richter were used instead as Sakurai felt that fans would probably prefer the Belmonts,[31] they were also included due to the Smash Ballot. Alucard makes cameo appearances instead.
Decidueye was almost chosen to represent Generation 7 of Pokemon instead of Incineroar, but when Sakurai wished for a professional-wrestler character, Incineroar was used instead.[32][33]
Despite the fact that Min Min and Pyra/Mythra are DLC fighters, they were considered alongside various other characters from ARMS and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but due to roster finalization being completed prior to the announcement of both games in January 2017, no fighters from either of the games could be added to the base roster.[34] This resulted in the characters becoming Mii costumes and Spirits.
Sakurai said in a Dragon Quest XI S livestream interview that he would have replaced Hero with Slime if Square Enix did not allow him to use the Hero.[35]
Ninjara was considered alongside Min Min to serve as the ARMS fighter, but Min Min was picked over Ninjara due to the spot on request from the game producer, Kosuke Yabuki.[36]
Rex was intended to fight alongside Pyra and Mythra, so the two of them could work together in the worst of battle. The idea, however, was cut after running into technical issues with the implementation of the idea. Sakurai also considered Pyra and Mythra's designs to be the most complex in the game, another issue was getting both characters to move at the same time which was impossible to do, it was also too difficult to have Rex as the main fighter with Pyra or Mythra behind him, thus ultimately leading to Rex being delegated into a smaller role, and Pyra and Mythra were given the ability to swap instead.
In "Mr. Sakurai Presents: Kazuya", Sakurai explained that he considered adding Heihachi Mishima from Tekken to the game as DLC Fighter 10. However, Sakurai wanted to incorporate the Devil Gene into gameplay, but he felt that because Heihachi Mishima did not have the Devil Gene, he would not have an interesting moveset, and chose Kazuya instead seeing him as a better character.[37] In other words, Sakurai decided to go with Kazuya as the Tekken fighter as opposed to Heihachi Mishima because Kazuya possesses the Devil Gene.
