Mario in a clash against the Prehistoric Piranha.

The Prehistoric Piranha is a large boss enemy in the upcoming video game Super Mario Galaxy. The boss lives in the Egg Planet Galaxy. It is inside an egg when Mario first encounters it. It's egg cracked when Mario crashes into it with the power of a Boost Star. The Prehistoric Piranha then starts moving around from inside the egg, thus starting a battle.

Appearance

It is quite notable that the Prehistoric Piranha's head looks like the popular boss Petey Piranha's head, though the body is much different. The Prehistoric Piranha's body beneath the Piranha Plant head is that of a dinosaur's, with a green hue. Its tail has a brown orb at the end of it with texture like some sort of seed.

Combat

The Prehistoric Piranha's combat isn't known too well, since only moments of the battle have been shown in a trailer, but it is known that the Prehistoric Piranha tramples over Mario, running around the Geo Planet and possibly performing other attacks.

It is suggested that the Prehistoric Piranha's unique tail is also used for fighting in some way, since it used the tail to break open the egg and such detail has been put into it; it was recently revealed that to injure the Prehistoric Piranha, Mario would need to hit it's tail, knocking it into the air, where it would snap back and bash the Prehistoric Piranha on the head and knock off petals.

It is also possible that the Prehistoric Piranha is just an enemy, rather than a boss, but quite unlikely.

An interesting feature is that when the Prehistoric Piranha first breaks out of its egg its head is purple (although this could also mean that there are two of these creatures). Later screenshots showed it with a red head and less petals. It is likely that the petals act as a sort of health meter for the creature, with its head changing color as it loses petals. But, in the E3 2007 trailer, it is shown to be purple, then red.
