User:Another gossip-loving Toad is a Mario fan from China. His favorite game is Paper Mario, especially because conversations in the game show a variety of the English language. He also likes speedruns, including TASes.
On Mario's name in Simplified Chinese
Things are different in China. Most Chinese people had only played one Mario game, Super Mario Bros.; they thought the character Mario was created just to participate in Super Mario Bros., so they called him "super Mary", because "Mario" wasn't a common name. A few people in China who had played more Mario games began to call him "Mario", recognizing him as a character independent from any particular game.
There was conflict, however, because most Mario fans liked the term "Mǎli'ào" while Nintendo stuck to calling him "Mǎlì'ōu". Now there is still disagreement. Someone has even posted comics satirizing Nintendo's stubbornness: [1] [2]
In short, the answer is:
- "超级玛丽" (chāojí Mǎlì) by ordinary people
- "马里奥" (Mǎli'ào) by most Mario fans
- "马力欧" (Mǎlì'ōu) by Nintendo
