Snow, originally referred to as snow banks,[1] is an interactable terrain element that makes occasional appearances in the snow-themed levels of the Super Mario series, beginning with New Super Mario Bros. Unlike the naturally occurring snow that covers the ground of these levels, these snowbanks affect the player character and are interactable. The means vary by game.

History

Snow banks appear only in World 5-1, a level that also contains snowball-tossing Snow Spikes. The snow fills large depressions in the ground that make it even with the surrounding ground. However, Mario (or Luigi) slightly sink into the snow when they walk on a snow bank and it reduces his jump height. This makes it difficult for him to avoid oncoming snowballs or hop over approaching Goombas. There are ? Blocks and Coin Blocks above snow banks that are lower than they would be above normal ground.

In Super Mario Galaxy, powdery snow covers the capsule-shaped planet in the Snow Cap Galaxy. They fill a depression on the planet that is only broken up by snow sculptures. Under the mission "Star Bunnies in the Snow," Mario (or Luigi) must look for Star Bunnies that are hiding in the snow. Moving the Star Pointer across snow clears it and, depending on the spot, can cause a Star Bunny or Star Bits to pop out. Snow can also be cleared with fireballs tossed by Fire Mario (or Fire Luigi).

Super Mario Odyssey

Soft layers of snow occurs throughout Shiveria in Super Mario Odyssey. The snow conceals terrain, secret areas, and Power Moons, and can be cleared with Cap Throws. Mario falls through snow if he attempts to walk along it. When Shiveria is first visited, the snow is what conceals the entrance to Shiveria Town in the glacial, outside area of Shiveria. In the town itself, the snow covers the Shining in the Snow in Town Power Moon and fills narrow corridors. Paths along the Snowy Mountain are covered with snow.

Outside of the town, the snow fills a cavity on the outer wall that contains Captain Toad. Snow also conceals a red door on the outer banks of the Freezing Sea.
