New Donker, Super Mario Odyssey

New Donkers are human characters found primarily in the New Donk City region of the Metro Kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey. In comparison to most humans in the Super Mario franchise, they are fairly realistically designed. Like how New Donk City is a reference to the real-life location New York City, they are named after the residents of the city (or the state), New Yorkers. The New Donkers' voice clips consist of gibberish that sounds like American English. Both light-skinned and dark-skinned New Donkers appear in Super Mario Odyssey.

Most of the New Donkers, both male and female, wear gray business suits and have a 1930s–1940s look. The male New Donkers also wear ties, gray fedoras, and shiny black shoes, while the female New Donkers wear gray sunhats, skirts, and shiny silver-gray heels and have a stylized shoulder-length hairstyle. The only New Donkers who do not wear gray attire are the members of Pauline's band, who all wear red attire and black fedoras with white bands around them, and the Crazy Cap employees, who wear purple and yellow outfits. Most New Donkers are always seen wearing hats, but there are two who do not, both of whom can be captured by Mario to control an RC Car.

History

Super Mario Odyssey

A few New Donkers give Mario Power Moons, such as a lonely New Donker found sitting on a bench. The first New Donker seen in the game is in the Sand Kingdom. This man, a taxi driver, is unable to meet with his Tostarenan customer (called the Desert Wanderer) due to his taxi being frozen in the middle of the desert. After the Metro Kingdom, a few New Donkers are also seen in Bowser's Kingdom near, and even operating, the Crazy Cap store. Finally, several others, along with their mayor Pauline, can be found in attendance at the wedding between Bowser and Peach in the Moon Kingdom. Like other attending members, they were brought forcefully.

As with other kingdom residents, several New Donkers can be found visiting other kingdoms after the main story is finished. The one who was found in Tostarena can also be found traveling in his taxi throughout the kingdoms with the Desert Wanderer.

Like many of the supporting characters, New Donkers will cower and refuse to talk to Mario if an enemy gets too close to them, regardless of whether Mario has captured the enemy in question or not.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

New Donkers appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the plaza of the New Donk City Hall stage if any song other than "Jump Up, Super Star!" and "Ground Theme (Band Performance) - Super Mario Bros." is selected as the background music.

Mario Tennis Aces

In Mario Tennis Aces, a crowd of New Donkers appears around Pauline and cheers for her during her Special Shot animation.

Mario Golf: Super Rush

New Donkers appear in the New Donk City golf course in Mario Golf: Super Rush. They appear only as background characters and do not affect gameplay.

Trivia

  • Some New Donkers that can be seen from a far distance disappear when Mario gets close to them. One example appears at the far corner of the park, and appears to be attempting to jump towards the lonely rooftop repeatedly. Several others can be seen walking across the central plaza in front of the City Hall, particularly when the player looks through the binoculars; these ones in particular seem to simply be animated textures, as they appear only from that angle, and can be seen going through posts and the bumps in the ground if examined carefully. All of the New Donkers that fade upon being approached seem to lack shadows as well.
  • As seen by concept art in The Art of Super Mario Odyssey, New Donkers were originally going to have proportions more similar to Mario.[1]
