Fishin' Lakitus (alternatively Fishing Lakitus)[1][2] are enemies introduced in Super Mario World. They are a variant of Lakitu that uses a fishing pole primarily for antagonistic purposes. It has become common for standard Lakitus to also be depicted with fishing poles, though they generally use them for helpful purposes.

History

Super Mario World

Fishin' Lakitu's sprite for Super Mario World

Fishin' Lakitus are enemies in Super Mario World. Only one Fishin' Lakitu ever appears, in Forest of Illusion 4, where it dangles a 1-Up Mushroom from a fishing pole. If the player character obtains the 1-Up Mushroom, the Fishin' Lakitu becomes a normal Lakitu and throws Spinies at him. Additionally, Fishin' Lakitus were introduced alongside a ghostly variant, Fishin' Boos.

Mario Kart series

Main article: Lakitu (Mario Kart referee)

Yoshi's Island series

In Yoshi's New Island

Fishin' Lakitus are recurring enemies in the Yoshi's Island series, being introduced in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its remake, and later return in Yoshi's New Island, having the same appearance and role between the games. Fishing Lakitus attempt to steal Baby Mario from Yoshi's back with a baitless fishing pole ending in a hook. If they snatch Baby Mario, the Countdown Timer will start. However, these Fishing Lakitus fly away from Yoshi with their catch, making it harder to save him.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

A Fishin' Lakitu appears in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars in Rose Way on the overworld, but not in battle as it is too high to reach. This Lakitu uses Shy Guys as bait.

Super Smash Bros. series

The Super Mario World incarnation of Fishin' Lakitu appears in the Super Mario World-themed Yoshi's Island stage introduced in Super Smash Bros. Melee and returning in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
