Can anyone explain what "World 36" means as what this world actually is?? How would "World 35" be represented the same way "World 36" is represented here by a blank?? Koopa lover 15:33, 15 April 2007 (EDT)

The 1-8 displayed are tiles 1-8 in the game's graphics. the 36th tile is a space, and world '36-1' displays as ' -1' because it tries to use the 36th graphic tile, which is a blank space. Yadda 16:31, 28 May 2007 (EDT)
Well, what is the 35th?? Anyone have a complete list?? Koopa lover 19:57, 29 May 2007 (EDT)
There's one at The Mushroom Kingdom site in the SMB complete guide. It's meant for use with extra lives but you can see all the tiles there.Kayube 13:35, 3 January 2008 (EST)
To answer your question, world 35-1 would be displayed by the game as Z-1 likewise world 37-1 would be displayed as a glitch symbol-1. After world 9 the game uses world A-Z, and then space for world 36-1 and after world 36 several glitched symbols. --Chickasaurus 16:09, 19 February 2010 (EST)
Why is "Z" the 36th graphic tile for letters/numbers called the 35th? There are "0" to "9" which are 10 tiles (if you say there's no zero, look at the title screen, and compare your score to the O in Mario), and "A" to "Z" is another 26 tiles, meaning the 36th graphic tile would be "Z".

Eh... This page needs a screenshot of the place though I know a site with level screenshots. Mr. Guy the GuyPickle.png Talk!E

Wasn't level -1 completable in the Japanese version? And resulted in -2 and -3, the completion of which resulted in completion of the game?-1337Yoshi'
Yep, that was in the Famicom Disk System version. Kayube 13:35, 3 January 2008 (EST)

Just wondering, but why isn't this page part of the list of glitches-primid snake

I believe it merits its own article, being so well-known and officially named. YELLOWYOSHI398

you know...

when they call it world -1, reely they had no numeral for 0 soooo, it would be normally be called world 0-1. since they didn't have a numeral for 0, its invisible,

for example:

  • world 1-1 is normal
  • world -1 is the minus world,
  • world 0-1 WOULD have been the name of the minus world, but there was no 0 placed in the game!

I was gonna mention world 36, but see people have figured it out already. As far as I know, you can get to 36-4 in the Japenese version. Maybe I used multiple glitches. Kirby694 11:35, 12 August 2011 (EDT)

If I remember correctly, you warp to 0-1. then make your way through the water, and finish world 0. PEACH tells you that she's in another castle...then you continued to 36-1, shown as: " -1" world 37 and onward...looks cloudy I found by cheating and other software on an emulator. Kirby694 11:35, 12 August 2011 (EDT)

Beyond -1

Under "Using hacking tools", it says "If one is to use a gaming tool that can set the level that Mario is on, the Minus World goes all the way to -8." I'm not fully sure what this means when editing the game as I'm doing some tests. Could someone explain please? Tony64 01:01, 23 April 2012 (EDT)

Beyond the Minus World, in a semi-legit manner (ie. old school Japanese way of doing on cartridge with no hacking...technically)

Check out the section "Super Secret Worlds." This is something that is long overdue for this article. LinkTheLefty 17:27, 23 April 2012 (EDT)

?

So in the JP version Mario will start his second quest, but what happens if done on the second quest. I see a good chance for a mission if someone would do this on the JP version and report back on my talk page.

YoshiLots of Green Yoshi, but one is RealThat's me!

HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the game on the vitrul console for 3ds and i doing the second quest where there are no goombas. I read the page and followed the instructions but te glitch won't work. Why is this?World 6 (talk)

I'm guessing the glitch was removed in the virtual console version. Either that, or you should keep trying. Peanutjon (talk) 23:23, 14 September 2012 (EDT)

It was stopped. Nintendo removed the glich in all later versions of the game. User: Owen422

Conjectural ?

Isn't this name conjectural ? The only official names are World 36-1, or World -1.
Banon (talk · edits) 14:55, 3 January 2013 (EST)

It's written like that in the DKC 2 manual. --Glowsquid (talk) 16:05, 3 January 2013 (EST)

and, the other worlds?

there is a world 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and a 36 as well. my qeustion is: and world 9-35?d dont they exist?

The problem is that Minus World itself is a glitch, so the game, for some reason, makes it World 36. The Minus World is not supposed to exist in the first place.
Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 19:38, 9 May 2013 (EDT)

I think I know the reason. Before going to the warp zone, it uses assets from the 2nd warp zone, the one leading to Worlds 36, 5, and 36. The tile used for world 36 is the blank tile, so that only 5 appears above the lone pipe. As for Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk)s question, worlds 9-35 do "exist", as well as Worlds 37-255 and World 0. They are glitched up worlds, because they were never meant to be used, so the game creates these "worlds", by borrowing stuff from other worlds, mostly the water thing. --Mariofan5000 (talk) 09:55, 19 July 2013 (EDT)

There are only 8 worlds. There is no "World 0" or "World 9-255". Just because the index for Worlds has 255 values, and the game is simple enough to load whatever garbage data that index ends up pointing to when you increment it outside of its range, doesn't mean that those are "Worlds." Saying that those are "Worlds" is akin to saying that New Super Mario Bros. Wii has 2,147,483,647 "worlds" if you found out that it used a 32-bit unsigned integer to point to the index that stored the levels in that game, and that it was just some kind of coincidence that 99% of those "worlds" crashed the game. 50.89.174.229 06:19, 21 October 2013 (EDT)

Total bull***p you say, @above. Super Mario Bros has a total of 256 Worlds. Those have 256 levels, though not all appear actually, and they're hidden within the code. Not only that. If you manage to do even more HEX editing, you can get 1024 LEVELS. Jeansowaty (talk) 13:51, 29 August 2015 (EDT)Jeansowaty

256^2 worlds levels/world = 65536 levels. Lysdexia (talk) 22:53, June 7, 2021 (EDT)

I thought we didn't cover hacks here, so should this section be removed? Yoshi876 (talk)

Ducking?

"Then, they should move to the far left end of the pipe, then duck while facing left. While ducking, the player should jump"

I've done the minus world thing for decades and never once did I have to duck as part of it. Nintendo Fun Club Newsletter issue 2, which is the first place most people could have ever heard of minus world back in the 80's (and where I heard of it) doesn't mention ducking, either. 68.51.193.141 19:56, 4 March 2015 (EST)

Well it even explains in the .gif but I'm not knowledgeable of the glitch myself. If possible, it would be great if you showed a demonstration of the glitch working without the ducking. 207.233.78.39

Super Mario Bros. Special

What happens if you (try) to do the glitch Super Mario Bros. Special? Does it work?

FamiCom/NES hack

If a underwater castle is added in the original NES' Minus World, the player can access to -2 and -3 (the latter one loads different every time). The -4 is just a black screen. https://youtu.be/IHTkH6nFHik --201.252.71.62 22:21, 6 November 2016 (EST)

Virtual Console

The article says that the Minus World was removed in virtual console releases, but I can still access it on my 3DS. -ProfessorJordan

The Super Mario Bros. that is available for download off the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U Virtual Console is an exact copy of the original game, meaning that gamers can once again enter the Minus World.

YouTube video?

Is there any YouTube video showing World -6, World -7 or World -8? Been looking everywhere...but couldn't find anything. Macbeth (talk) 20:02, 17 February 2018 (EST)

Nintendo Switch?

is it possible to do this glitch on the nintendo switch online NES?

Yes. It's just the 1985 game that was recycled. CBFan5 (talk)

How does Mario glitch through the pipe?

I know how to do the glitch, but how and why does the player glitch through the pipe to the warp zone pipes? Does one of the pipe tiles have no collision? CBFan5 (talk)

Stop callan this Minus World

The name is properly Sky World, between Z World and Blank World, and the stage has a hýphen spoken like a glottal stop, not a minus, so there's no double minus world either. https://www.google.com/search?q=%22Super+Mario+Bros.%22+tiles+0+255&tbm=isch#imgrc=c3Y_igP6hHLKdM Lysdexia (talk) 23:19, June 7, 2021 (EDT)
