Freezie
A Freezie from Super Smash Bros. Melee.

...aka: Slipice (Arcade version) ...aka: Freeze (Japan)

First Appearance: Mario Bros. (Arcade 1983)

Overview

Freezie is a creature made entirely of ice. They vary greatly in size and shape, but are instantly recognisable thanks to their permanently puzzled expression. Despite being one of Mario's first enemies, they have only recently started appearing in games again.

Mario Bros.

(Arcade 1983)

Freezies first appear on Stage 9. They emerge from the pipes and slide along the platforms like the other enemies. If it stops in the center of a platform then it coats the platform in ice, destroying itself in the process. A frozen platform is very slippery, and it may occasionally drop icicles. Hit the Freezie from below to destroy it and earn 500pts. Freezies don't count as regular enemies - you don't have to clear it from the screen to beat the stage. If Mario or Luigi touches a Freezie, they will lose a life, but also destroy the Freezie.

Freezie is the only recurring enemy from Mario Bros. that has kept its NES name rather than its original Arcade name.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

(Gamecube 2001)

The first game outside of the various Mario Bros. remakes to feature Freezie. It is used as an item, appearing at random on the battlefield and sliding around until picked up. Throw Freezie at an enemy to freeze them, temporarily disabling their movement and leaving them vulnerable to attack.

If you defeat an opponent by throwing a Freezie at them, then you receive the Freezie KO bonus.

Freezie also appears as a collectable trophy.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

(Gamecube 2003)

Found on the Sherbet Land track. On the ice lake at the end of the stage you can find large, stationary Freezies. Hit them with an item (or your Kart) and they will start sliding around. If a Freezie hits a wall then it will shatter. Driving into a Freezie freezes your Kart for a few seconds.

Mario Pinball Land

(Game Boy Advance 2004)

On the second screen of the Snowy stage, a Freezie sits in the middle of the screen while penguins walk around it. You have to hit the Freezie, pushing it over the crack in the ice. This creates a hole to the boss area.

Mario Power Tennis

(Gamecube 2004)

On the Mario Bros. Classic stage, the original sprites for enemies are used, including Freezie. When playing a Gimmick Match, Freezies will occasionally slide onto the court and freeze half of your play area. Hit the POW Block to stop it.

Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix

(Gamecube 2005)

A giant Freezie is the boss of the World 4 snowy mountain, having frozen the final Music Key inside itself. Toad tries asking for it back, but the Freezie simply responds "...", so he hatches a plan for Mario (or Luigi) to melt the Freezie with some burnin' hot dance moves. The Freezie attempts to block Mario’s dance steps with ice, but they can be countered by activating Fire Flowers to keep his hot beat alive. Eventually, the giant Freezie melts away into a puddle of water and Mario recovers the last Music Key.
