Candies are special items found in Mario Party 8. Replacing the Capsules of Mario Party 7, players can collect and eat the Candies found throughout the boards to either help themselves or hinder the progress of their opponents. Upon eating a Candy, a player will either change their physical appearance for a short time, or receive an enhanced ability of some nature. A single player can hold up to three candies, while a two-player team can hold five.
While free Candies can be earned by passing over Candy Areas, there is no way to determine which Candy a player will receive upon crossing one. However, players can also visit Candy Shops, where they may purchase a Candy of their choice in exchange for Coins. Unlike the Orbs and Capsules of the three previous installments, Candies cannot be thrown onto Red and Blue Spaces to create Character Spaces or roadblocks; they are more like the items from the first four Mario Parties.
Additionally, the grand prize awarded to the winner of the Star Battle Arena is a year's supply of Candy.
