A Pidgit flying on his magic carpet.

A Pidgit is a small black or purple bird which first made an appearance in the game Super Mario Bros. 2. Pidgits are unable to fly on their own and thus they use a magic carpet to soar through the skies of Subcon. To attack, a Pidgit will attempt to fly into Mario or one of his friends. Thus, Mario should Jump on top of the Pidgit during its descent and thrown it off the magic carpet. Mario can then ride the magic carpet for short distances. Often, Mario needs to use these magic carpets to reach inaccessible parts of certain levels.

Starting in Super Mario World, the Lakitus seemed to have absorbed the characteristics of Pidgit, making the bird somewhat obsolete. A Lakitu rides in a smiling cloud, and if Mario can somehow defeat the Lakitu, its cloud will be left behind. As such, if Mario jumps in the cloud, he can use it to fly through a level for a short period of time (just like a Pidgits magic carpet).

In Super Mario World, if Mario or Luigi clear all the levels of the Special World, Bullet Bills will be changed to resemble Pidgits and be renamed Pidgit Bills.

However, Pidgits recently appeared as common enemies in Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. They are located on Yoshi's Island. To attack, a Pidgit would fly its magic carpet high in the air, then come crashing down into Mario or Luigi.

Two Pidgits battle the four Mario Bros. of past and present.

If a Pidgit is on the left, it would attack Mario. If it's on the right, a Pidgit would attack Luigi. Occasionally, during its attack, a Pidgit will jump, briefly stalling and throwing off Mario or Luigi's counter-attack. However, if a Pidgit jumps before it begins its attack, Mario and Luigi will know that the bird will also jump (and stall) during its attack, allowing the plumbers to adjust their timing for a counter-attack. Additionally, some Pidgits carry a bag in battle; these special Pidgits have a higher Speed rating than normal Pidgits.

Additionally, Pidgits appear as Wario's monsters in Wario's Woods.

Pidgits make a cameo appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee. They appear in the level Mushroom Kingdom II: Subcon and ride magic carpets. Interestingly, while its magic carpet is three-dimensional, the Pidgit is a two-dimensional sprite. The fighters could hop on the magic carpet as long as the Pidgit was on the screen.
